After a couple of weeks of dealing with over supply I think I now have thrush again :( since last night feeding from my left breast is so so painful I can't take it anymore and its getting engorged and sore. Ds (11 weeks nearly ) keeps pulling off and refusing to feed from it wgich is not helping and it hurts all the time. Am going to try to get a doc appt tomorrow but may not be able to get one til tues. Dreading feeding tonight and tomorrow :(

Oh, poor you. I found sitting in. A hot bath and hand expressing, kneading the knot our helps but the thing that really helped me was piriton. I don't know if it's recommended when bring, I have autoimmune issues and get it on prescription but it made a huge difference to me.

MixedBerries · 11/12/2011 21:54

Hi. I'm so sorry you're having problems. My ds is 8 weeks and we're having nightmares too. I'm no expert but can you try feeding from the right one alone and hand express from the left to relieve any engorgement? I mean until you can get a doctor's appointment. And could you try getting an emergency appointment tomorrow? If you can't feed your baby, I think that counts as an emergency.
In the meantime, Ibuprofen was the best thing I found to relieve pain. Good luck and don't feel alone- you'll find a lot of support on here. Just try and get through to tomorrow and take it from there.

organiccarrotcake · 11/12/2011 21:55

Oh no :(

You really should be able to get an emergency appointment (this is one as it impacts infant feeding) tomorrow. Worst case scenario you can get Daktarin gel and cream over the counter from the pharmacy to keep you going until the GP can diagnose properly.

Piriton is not going to help thrush, sorry. But it's certainly fine to take ibuprofen and paracetamol.

if you are sure it is thrush (I had it lots when I was feeding)
send your partner to boots and get a canesten once capsule,

Your doctor can prescribe it but it wold be quicker for your DH to pick you one up.

mummy2l · 11/12/2011 22:16

Thanks everyone its a nightmare its Sunday as everything round here is shut but I will defiantly tell them about it causing problems when I call tomorrow that's a really good idea. Just had to put Ds down and walk away as pain is so bad but other breast is empty :(

Thanks mixed and happy - ill try some hand expressing as don't want it to lead to any blockages.
Bythe power - I'm assuming its thrust as breast hurts and nipple hurts so so much when he feeds could it be something else as its so bad on that one side?

for me thrush felt a bit like he was sucking shards of glass through my nipples not milk. it was a deep pain inside my breast not just on the nipple

mummy2l · 11/12/2011 22:28

Yes that about sums it up :( it still hurts all they way in the breast when he has finished too so does sound like thrush I guess.

Are you sure it's not mastitis? Poor you. Express the milk or go into a hot shower/bath and gently press down from the top to the nipple. Placing a warm flannel over the top. If you have any geranium essential oil that help with milk regulation, pop that on the flannel as you massage downwards (just a drop and make sure nothing is on your skin when feeding). Cabbage leaves placed inside your bra between feeds. Something I realised after having numerous mastitis attacks with dc3 was actually my feeding bra was too small, once I went up about two sizes I didn't suffer again. Your poor baby probably cannot latch on properly due to the engorgement. I hope you feel better soon.

'Tis late so will post and run, sorry.

Thrush is hardly ever one-sided.

If it's only on one side it's almost certainly something else...you really need to see someone who can observe a feed and check out all the possibilities.

Hope tonight is not too awful :(

mummy2l · 12/12/2011 08:25

Morning! I managed to get an appt for late morning as I explained its an emergency. I can't even put my baby to my left breast at all anymore as the pain is so bad even when not feeding. I tried hand expressing in the night and it hurts even as the milk leaves the breast without Ds being on it.
How long would the treatment take to work? I really don't want whatever is wrong to spell the end of breastfeeding :(

Morning mummy21. Glad you managed to get an appointment. I know it's agony but it's really best if you can try to remove the/some milk one way or another- leaving your boob full will only make things worse in the long run. So much easier said than done though.
About the treatment, I guess it depends what's wrong. I had mastitis a few times and the Ibuprofen helped with the pain but I saw an improvement from antibiotics after a day or so.
It needn't be the end. Just try to take it an hour at a time until the appointment. Do stress to the DR how much it hurts. Maybe they can give you better painkillers. Wishing you a speedy recovery and lots of sympathy, x

organiccarrotcake · 12/12/2011 10:31

Morning,

If it's thrush it needs fixing no matter what so there is no point in stopping BFing, as once it's gone all will be fine again.

Hope today's appointment is useful.

Canestan Once is not enough - take a look here www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/thrush-and-breastfeeding.html

While TT is of course right that Thrush is hardly ever one sided I've personally had experience of it beign VV bad on one side and just starting on the other so it might be that.

mummy2l · 12/12/2011 20:52

Thank you so much mixedberried and organiccarrotcake the gp gave me a 10th day course of antibiotics and a topical gel so hopefully that will fix the prob. Thank you so much for everyone's support it sounds stupid but this is the most pain I've ever had ...even after the c sec. Am taking an hour at a time .

OP posts:
tiktok · 12/12/2011 21:07

Sounds like the GP thinks it is an infection (ie not thrush). Hope the antibiotics work for you, OP - miserable to be in so much pain :(

organiccarrotcake · 12/12/2011 21:47

mummy I've not had a C-sec so can't compare that, but I have had two drug-free labours and I have experienced breast pain that I couldn't cope with when I had been able to cope with labour pain, to put it into context.

It doesn't sound stupid. At all.

Good plan to take an hour at a time. As TT says, GP obviously doesn't think it's thrush. Let us know how you get on. What's the topical gel BTW?

PipPipPip · 13/12/2011 21:45

You poor lady! No advice, just sympathy - breastfeeding can be so friggin' difficult at times. Good luck x x x x

mummy2l · 15/12/2011 03:05

Hi organic sorry its been a couple of days but it turned into full on masitis and so have been having to hold my breast to feed. I think we may have turned the corner with the nipple pain tonight finally :) and I'm trying to feed feed feed to work out the lump.

The topical gel she gave me was daktarin (sp?) Which does seem to be for thrush.

Thanks so much for all the support . Thanks Pip and I totally agree its been so so tough at times; much harder than I thought it would be! Yet so so rewarding
