I had my ds on Saturday. I already have a ds (21 months) who I fed for 6 weeks but stopped as I have flat nipples and was given terrible advice and couldn't cope. This time I'm not giving up! The baby is pulling my nipples slowly slowly which is fine, a tad itchy and uncomfortable but it passes. The thing is he poos almost immediately after a feed....every single time. Is this normal? Or could he be reacting to something in my milk?

Is there a real life local support group near you that you can go to?

BF babies all have different pooing habits. Some poo every day after feeds, some poo every few days. Neither is right or wrong.

Alternatively there is a poster called tiktok who is a font of wisdom regarding breastfeeding. You could try dropping her a pm?

Oh yes I shall do. Thanks. The MWs are coming today to weigh him so I can grill them too. There is a bf support group but my first was born in the Easter holidays and they were shut and they're only open for one week now before Christmas! Poor timing!

Congratulations on your lovely DS Exquisite.

Pooing after every feed is perfectly normal for a bf baby and if anything is a good sign, he's getting plenty of milk Xmas Smile. This info might help to reassure you.

As for your nipples, is there a Bfing Support group locally where you could talk through your concerns or a local Bfing Counsellor or do you have the numbers of the Bfing Helplines?

Its normal, breastfed babies poo for Britain, mine is 11 weeks now and only just settled down to 1 a day :) at the beginning he often pooed mid feed, very distracting!

By the way, my nips are completely inverted and we're still going strong 11 weeks on. I know what u mean about that itchy feeling!

Oh and congratulations!

x-posted there.

Normal and good (unless you are only feeding a few times a day!).

If:-

you are feeding to baby's cues,

you are giving baby at least 8-12 feeds a day,

baby isn't excessively sleepy (sleeping for more than one long stretch a day - 4hrs +, or difficult to rouse after a long sleep),

not removing baby after a set amount of time (letting baby rather than a clock decide when the feed is finished),

offering at least both sides per feed (doesn't matter if baby doesn't take the 2nd or 3rd, etc side just that you are offering it),

feeding is basically comfortable (start might be uncomfortable or even painful but so long as it gets better during the feed),

and baby is doing at least 6 wet disposable nappies or 8 cloth nappies a day

then you've cracked it! Well done Grin

If any of those things aren't happening, that can be worked on, it's not the end of bfing.

Hello and congratulations!
My DS also poos either mid-feed (cue some grunting, straining and thrashing) or straight afterwards, and yes, pretty much every time. He's 12 weeks old and perfectly healthy.

Another reassurance re.flat nipples, I have 'em too and (not without a host of hard won battles) feeding is a pleasure.

Truth yes that's a great checklist! Good to know I'm not alone with flat nipples. Feeding isn't painful just uncomfortable to start with. My boobs are like rocks though so that figures...have begun expressing to ease the weight of them!
