Sick after first FF?

I had to leave a bottle of formula for BF 10mo DS3 tonight, as his dad was looking after him, and I had a charity football match to attend.

Yes, it could be a reaction to the cow's milk unfortunately.

As he's 10 months, if you need to leave him again it might be worth trying to give something else instead? Maybe try something like oat milk for a one-off type drink (certainly not suggesting that it's a formula or BM replacement but you're not asking for that either :) )

LeggyBlondeNE · 07/12/2011 09:51

Yes my 15mo is still sick after consuming dairy in any form. Usually about half an hour after the suspect item was eaten. She's been on a soya formula since I spotted the link when introducing solids, and she's still having it now when the other kids have a cup of milk.

organiccarrotcake · 07/12/2011 12:56

leggy has the Soya formula mean recommended by a doctor? It's just that soya isn't great for small children and really shouldn't be available as a formula off the shelf in my opinion so unless it's been recommended by a GP it may be worth running it by them for their thoughts. They may say it's fine of course. There are other milk options that might be worth a try. I mentioned oat milk. Rice milk isn't suitable for a child under 4. Just an idea :)

Alpro do a higher fat, enriched soya milk that's suitable from age 1, if that's any help?

NotJustForClassic - no, not as a main milk drink for a baby, I would agree. But as a food supplement for an older child (or for the OPs 10 month old in a very occasional bottle), not a problem.

garliclover · 07/12/2011 13:27

organic, I think soya formula is not recommended for babies under 6 months. 10mo seems old enough to have it and it's more nutritious than other milk substitutes apart from hydrolyzed formula.

organiccarrotcake · 07/12/2011 13:49

garlic soya is not good for babies as their main source of milk, so any child up to around 18 months or so really. It contains oestrogen-like substances which can affect hormonal balances so while it's ok as a small part of the diet, it's not suitable as a main milk drink. Furthermore, many children with cow's milk allergy are also allergic to soya which can be a problem. Hydrolised formula for the under 1s would be the most suitable option where CMPI or CM allergy had been proven or was seriously suspected (ie for the OP for whom I wasn't suggesting oat milk) where breastmilk wasn't an option, but other milks are fine for the over 1s or so with babies who have a good mixed diet (which was a suggestion directed at leggy rather than the OP) :)

But thanks for clarifying - I should have been more clear that I wasn't suggesting that the OP give oat milk or similar :)

CardyMow · 07/12/2011 19:27

What is hydrolised formula? It was about 45 minutes-ish after he had the formula that he puked. He has been very ratty and grumpy all day today, and he had another loose green BM this morning. His excema is worse too - it was almost clear yesterday morning, now he has patches behind his knees, in his armpits, and under his chin again.

Last time I gave him cheese, he threw up, now I think about it.

It's not that I want to totally give up BF or anything, but being a lone parent, it would be nice to be able to have the occasional break where ex-P can have DS3 without me being there. I rarely get the time to sit and express enough for a 9/10 oz bottle, as I also have 3 older dc.

That's the thing - he doesn't eat a huge amount at meals - tbh he eats like a sparrow. He would rather have boobie than food. Unless it is banana, but I find that if he has more than one banana a day, he gets constipated. He will eat most foods - just not MUCH. I wasn't too worried about that yet, after all, he's only 10mo, but it does mean that if I want to go out at all - I need some sort of milk for him, and to get 9/10 oz of BM, it can take me four separate hour-long expressing sessions. Which I don't have time for, half an hour is a stretch with the other dc to look after!

It's hypoallergenic stuff - Nutramigen or Neocate, generally available on prescription (v expensive to buy from the pharmacist).

Sounds like a trip to the GP to discuss possible intolerance might be a good idea (if it's lactose intolerance, then you have some choice in special lacto free milk and dairy products you can get now - rather than a cows milk protein allergy which would mean all dairy would be out).

His eczema might also benefit from you giving up dairy whilst you're bf (made a huge difference to dd1, but she is very allergic).

Come and talk to us on the allergy board, we're all world experts on allergy and intolerance unfortunately!

CardyMow · 07/12/2011 21:15

I have all but given up dairy - did that on the advice of the BF lady when DS3 was only about 8 weeks and his excema was terrible.

I DO NOT NEED ANOTHER DC WITH ALLERGIES FFS!

DD is allergic to kiwi and pineapple. DS1 is allergic to gluten and latex. DS2 is allergic to latex, kiwi and pineapple.

Oh - most of the allergies come from my side of the famly - but DS3's dad is actually lactose intolerant...and never has any dairy. Oh sweaty bumcracks!

lukewarmMulledWhine · 08/12/2011 09:30

Ahhhh, didn't realise you already had allergies in the family. Sorry, looks like it might be another one... (but doesn't sound too severe at least? trying to look on the bright side Hmm)

Sweaty bumcracks Grin

organiccarrotcake · 08/12/2011 10:54

:(Very unlikely to be lactose intolerance because there's (huge amounts of) lactose in BM which he would already be reacting to. Much more likely to be a reaction to CMP. Yes, I totally see your point on the expressing. I would, like you, be perfectly comfortable with him "eating like a sparrow" at 10 months but clearly you need a going-out option. Good news is that you can trial the allergenic formula free on prescription... just to see if he'll drink it...
