Sterilising - when did you stop?

I think we are advised to sterilise bottles until 12 months in the UK. Did any of you stop much earlier? I know some people use the dishwasher - do you then put in the cupboard or count that as sterilised and use within 24 hours? LO is 6 months.

when she started picking up things off the floor snd putting them in her mouth

Miaou · 08/01/2006 17:08

I followed RTKM's advice and haven't sterilised anything with ds. HOWEVER I have never used bottles and only started using spoons/bowls etc when ds was 21 weeks.

With the dds I think I did the same as expat - long time ago so I've forgotten

springerspaniel · 08/01/2006 17:10

Expat - I thought that too. I don't sterilise spoons or bowls so it seems a bit odd sterilising bottles. I know milk is a big bacteria fan but even so it seems a little silly. Sterilising is such a pain in the a*se.

Miaou · 08/01/2006 17:36

He is lockets! I'm counting it in months now, he's five and a bit months!

Springerspaniel, RTKM is another poster. Let me see if I can find the thread where she posted this advice.

Miaou · 08/01/2006 17:40

here is the original thread

And here is a follow-up discussion on the subject - hope that helps!

springerspaniel · 08/01/2006 18:00

Just read it. V interesting and I have to say I agree with the non-sterilising thing. It makes sense. Some of George's cuddly toys have been sucked a lot and probably have sneaky bits of sick on them so are just fantastic breeding grounds for bacteria...and I don't sterilise them. In fact, I'm afraid to say I only wash them when they start to smell. Thanks for the opinions. I'll have a think.

6 months, agree with the "everything goes in their mouth now" logic.
both my kids have been perfectly healthy.

Whe he started chewing the wheels of his pushchair, and the cat.

Blondeinlondon · 08/01/2006 18:56

Still sterilise now at nearly 11 mths although it's not necessary - I personally do it to counteract duff washing up!!

NewYearsRacerLution · 08/01/2006 19:32

Yesterday! At just under 7 months. Great feeling clearing the kitchen worktop of all that gubbins

tribpot · 08/01/2006 19:37

I sterilise bottles still (ds is 27 weeks .. or it might be 28 actually - 6 months, anyway). But nothing else. I can't sterilise the TV remote control therefore everything else that goes into his mouth is up for grabs really! I just worry about the bacteria growing on the milk. Feeding things get put in the dishwasher but the remote control just gets a wipe with a muslin now and then!

I stopped the day that ds1 ate a dead spider off the floor at my dad's house. He was about 7 months.

NewYearsRacerLution · 08/01/2006 19:42

LOL at dead spider!

I forgot, you asked about what to do with the bottles. I let mine dry out completely on rack then put in fridge but then I only do one a day so not having to take up too much fridge space.

springerspaniel · 08/01/2006 21:14

Yuck at the dead spider.
