I am so hungry and thirsty... but my husband keeps reminding me that I am not pregnant anymore!

is this normal?

yes its normal!

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 01/12/2011 17:03

Keep eating and drinking, especially drinking otherwise you'll get awful headaches. I know Wink!

fraktious · 01/12/2011 17:03

Ohhh yes. I eat 3000+ calories a day - note than when pg.

The thirst is utterly normal too - you're losing in fluid whatever you feed your baby so of course you have to replace it. Plus lochia/night sweats if you're immediately post partum.

Tell him to shut up and pass you the chocolate and a nice cold glass of water.

Spagbolagain · 01/12/2011 17:05

Yes. When I was bf I had a lot of hot chocolate. Deals with food and drink requirements in 1 go :)

HappyAsASandboy · 01/12/2011 17:15

Oh yes. I had the follow meals as routine for the first 4 months or so;

6am ish - Breakfast One - Cereal with milk, tinned fruit, coffee and fresh juice
10am ish - Breakfast Two - Toast (at least two slices) with honey, something sweet and stodgy like sponge and custard or trifle, Coffee
12 ish - Lunch One - Chunky soup or stew with toast or crusty bread
2pm ish - Lunch Two - Sandwiches (many), crisps, two pieces of fruit, some cake
5pm ish - Crackers with cheese and a yogurt
8pm ish - Normal dinner (but always of the stodgy variety - lasagne, curry, stew and mash, cottage pie etc)

Then in between I'd eat biscuits. At least one packet overnight.

In my defence, I was feeding twins and I didn't put any weight on (was pre-pregnancy weight at 6 week check). So I really was just eating and drinking to hunger/thirst.

I good the all consuming where-is-my-next-meal-coming-from hunger eased at about 4 months. Then I went a bit erratic and forgot about meals then got starving.

I reckon you shouldneat if you're hungry. If you start putting weight on (or if you have a lot to lose) then maybe that's not such a good plan, but as long as you're maintaining your weight then you're eating what you need Smile

Oops, excessive posting as well as excessive eating Blush

littleweed10 · 01/12/2011 19:36

yes very normal - i couldn't get enough water from a normal glass so i used to drink it straight from a a big jug like a tankard!
as for the food, I packed it in.
and still lost weight
You are just a powerplant for making unctious milk!

ShowOfHands · 01/12/2011 19:38

What was the question?

I've eaten dh and the upstairs rooms. And still lost 24lbs in 12 weeks.

Pascha · 01/12/2011 19:40

I ate the house and everything in it and lost weight too. still am Cake is your friend. Lots and lots of cake.

camdancer · 01/12/2011 19:55

I've found that I need to eat constantly, doesn't matter what the food is. So it could be rice cakes or it could be chocolate. Chocolate is obviously preferable though. Smile

littleweed10 · 01/12/2011 22:38

I remember having double portions of pasta, and troughing it in with one hand, whilst feeding (constantly). bonkers, arent our bodies amazing?!

paranoid2android · 02/12/2011 09:19

I'm eating just a bit more than my normal diet, but that's because I put on a massive amount while pregnant (over 4st!) and I'm very short so that was a lot for me. I think you either eat tons while pregnant or breastfeeding. I do drink a lot of water though.

WoTmania · 02/12/2011 11:47

I'm another constantly hungry in early days person. During pregnancy I don't eat that much more but once I BF a little one. I still manage to lose most of the weight. Bodies vary.

WoTmania · 02/12/2011 11:49

I missed out half a sentence. 'During pregnancy I don't eat that much more but once I BF a little one I eat loads.' it should read

tickleme63 · 02/12/2011 12:31

Show Grin Saving downstairs for dessert?

I'm always hungry, but don't remember to eat when DS is having the grizzles until I realise I'm getting all shaky and irritable... Not good at all and something to work on, I think.

Oh dear god, the night sweats. I'd forgotten about those :( Ugh...

MigGril · 02/12/2011 13:45

Oh yes totaly normal. I remeber having to eat in the middle of the night in the early day's I was just so hungery.

mamaesi · 02/12/2011 15:38

thats so strange. i have never heard of night sweats... but I am having them terribly!

is it because of breastfeeding? I thought I was getting sick or something

OP posts:
Pascha · 02/12/2011 16:10

I had terrible night sweats for a few weeks after birth, I assumed it was hormonal. It goes away.

worldgonecrazy · 02/12/2011 16:16

I completely forgot my manners during the first few weeks - I needed food and I NEEDED IT NOW!!!! I would stuff food down as fast as I could and drink gallons of posh squash. All perfectly normal. I found that those pre-wrapped chocolate brioche were perfect for keeping next to the bed for night time snacks. And the best thing is that you don't actually put on any weight whilst stuffing everything in sight down your gob. It's great.

Booboostoo · 02/12/2011 16:29

Another one here who is scoffing down any food I can get my hands on! I do cookies and milk in the afternoon...nom, nom, nom!

Still have night sweats at 6 months post birth, but fewer every month.

ALotToTakeIn · 02/12/2011 16:46

I was expecting to be starving especially as I ate enough for a rugby team in the last month of pg. but have only felt hungry twice since I had DD 5 weeks ago, very strange. She is bfing enough for a rugby team too- wonder where she gets that from.

Didn't know night sweats were normal no one mentioned those but they were horridSad

ShowOfHands · 02/12/2011 21:33

The night sweats you don't quite believe until you're going through it. Oh they were bloody awful. You feel like you're about to sucuumb to the flu. I really struggled to stay hydrated at times. Particularly in hospital post cs and they had the thermostat on hotter than hell. I begged them to wash me on the first evening. Always said I'd never consent to a bed bath but bugger me was I disgusted with myself.

BornSicky · 02/12/2011 22:06

i still love the breastfeeding and cake diet...

best guilt-free eating i've ever done! Grin
