Doesn't understand bottle/cup

DD is 10 months and I can't get her to take fluids from anything other than my boobs. She just doesn't seem to be able to learn how a bottle/cup works. She just wants to gnaw on the bottle but doesn't actually drink.
I've tried various cups & bottles. Nuby sippy cup, avent etc with teat & with the softish mouthpiece.
Has anyone any ideas how I can teach her or what might work. Ive tried demonstrating the sippy cup myself, but it didn't seem to make much difference :(
She's always trying to steal my drinks bottle or cans, but then doesn't know what to do with them.

If shes chewing on them ,thats gotta b a start!,try and get the cheap ones that leak if tipped, they will dribble in her mouth then!she might gag abit at firdt but will learn that fluid comes from there too! Have u put ur breast milk in there too?a more familiar taste than water or juice!

If she's bf, she won't understand silicone spout things are for sucking! I guess we will have to wait till scientists to create flesh like plastics so they can be made into teats. Grin

Anyway my DD is 8mo and ebf. We have much better success with free flow and open rim cups. If you tip theses cups upside down water drips out so no sucking required. I have a tommee tippee first cup, available from most supermarket. Also a doidy cup which is open rim (from John lewis). The doidy is messy but she really likes it, poking her finger in to feel the water. Very cute.

Give these a try and good luck.

I've bought a doidy cup online, just waiting for it to arrive. I think it'll be one to try out in the bath first!

My DD can't hold the cups yet. I hold the cup in front of her. If she wants a drink she leans forward and I put the cup to her mouth and tilt it for her. Is your 10mo holding the cup herself? I can't imagine how messy that would be with a doidy!

bagelmonkey · 30/11/2011 15:52

Oh, DD is a bit on the small side so the cups are almost the size of her head! I'm holding them, but she tries to grab them off me & hug them to gnaw at. Which is why the doidy will be trialed in the bath. :)

Btw have a look at the TT first cup, aka flip top too. They are a lot less messy since water just drip from the spout bit. It's great when going out too since they don't leak. The only problem I have with them is that they are a PITA to open!

bagelmonkey · 30/11/2011 18:35

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll look out for the TT if the doidy doesn't work.

I had the same problem with DS2. A NUK first cup was a winner for us in the end. Good luck Smile MPD

ds2 and dd were like this, wouldn't touch any sort of bottle or cup, breastfed til 14 months and then both miraculously got the hang of it with this nuby cup... fwiw, they both (at 4 and 2 respectively) still drink in a VERY peculiar way, they stick their tongues out as they drink, and i suspect that stopped the drinks flowing from bottles
