my baby is BF and 11 weeks old

generally fine / happy / feeds well

when she was screaming tonight when daddy was dressing her after her bath I noticed some whitER patched in her mouth

does this mean anything? should i be worried or is it just normal?

Could be thrush. Are there red patches too?

nannyl · 29/11/2011 20:25

i didnt see any red patches. (and she is now fast asleep so i cant really check)

they wernt bright white or anything, but enough to notice and i ahdnt noticed before.

she has no "symptoms" though.

IF it was thrush what happens, what do we do? do we need to do anything? how do i know?

Congrats on your new bundle! White patches are most commonly milk deposits, thrush does show up as white patches sometimes, but is not always visable. As you havent mentioned problems feeding or pain, or your baby fussing at the boob i think its unlikely to be thrush, but you would be best to check in with your hv / doc to be sure. Milk deposits are nothing to worry about btw! :)

ok, thanks for that Smile

ill just not worry and show HV on friday then

If it's thrush, you'll probably be given antifungal medicine to give. My baby liked the taste of it, so it was easy to give.

Have you tried wiping the patches off with a cotton bud? Thrush cant be wiped off, milk deposits can.

If it is thrush, you would do well to start taking some lactobacillus acidophilus (healthy bacteria) asap. Be very careful about your latch, thrush can become a big problem for you if you get cracked nipples and the bacteria gets into your milk ducts (very painful!) also keep a close eye on baby's nappy area, the bacteria can pass through the intestine and come out in their poo and cause a rash on their bum. Ordinary nappy cream may make this rash worse, so if you notice that happening, you will need to put some antifungal cream on it as soon as you can.

Is you baby farting a lot? This can be a sign that they have thrush in their intestines. Also, have you recently taken antibiotics? been anaemic? suffered from diabetes? Any of these would make you more susceptible.

I hope your HV can help shed some light on it.
