How can I get baby to take in more hind milk?

Baby is 3 months old. She is breastfed.
She has green poo and poos at least 6 times, more like 10 times on average every day.
She also seems distressed and uncomfortable when trying to feed sometimes. She has been more uncomfortable recently. Seems to have tummy ache and farts a lot.
I took her to the dr last night as I thought she might have sore ears or throat as she was struggling to feed and seemed so uncomfortable. Dr said all fine.
Tonight I googled green poo in babies and found several sites all describing dd to a t.
Seems that the problem is likely she is taking too much fore milk and not enough hind milk.
Apart from one site saying to improve the latch to help resolve this, I couldn't find any suggestions as to what to do to get her to take more hind milk!!
Is this a common thing? How can I help her?

I don't think this is a big problem. All of mine had the green poos, put down to 'snacking'.

If you want more hind milk, don't change sides and don't let your baby fall asleep after a few minutes (tickle feet).

You could express a couple of ounces before a feed.

Catsu · 27/11/2011 20:04

Thanks.
I don't change sides at the moment. Have only ever given one side pee feed as she doesn't want more than that.
She feeds quite often and does seem uncomfortable. Her poos are not only green and very very frequent, they are also pretty explosive, with at least one full change of clothes required each day!

Would block feeding help do you think?

X post with graciescotland.
I will try that. I have not been able to express when I tried before though so might not work! Thanks for idea though

Catsu - Have a a look at this. It explains 'fore' and 'hind' milk.

Have you any issues like oversupply (massive amounts of milk, engorgement, overactive letdown, baby pulls away or clamps down during a feed) or has baby had a virus/illness recently?

Catsu · 27/11/2011 20:20

Thanks. I was trying to search on kellymom for info but couldn't find what I was looking for! That link is helpful
Dd is not sleepy. She tends to feed fairly often through the day and doesn't often fall asleep feeding. She is gaining weight well and sleeps all night.
I don't know if I have oversupply. I have a strong let down. Dd often struggles with the flow at first and she does pull away and sometimes clamp down. When she pulls away the milk sprays everywhere so I can see it's fast!
I don't feel overly engorged but am def engorged first thing in the morning every day and that takes a few hours to feel normal as dd doesn't empty al l the milk in one feed plus she only has one side per feed. When she is hungry I can tell which side to feed from as one will feel heavier and fuller.

Oh and dd does have a cold. She has stuffy nose and is sneezing. That's why I took her to dr to check her ears and throat in case it was more than just s cold

Infections (like a cold) can cause green poos (not saying that it is definitely this just a possibility) so it might settle down in a few days.

Over active letdown is a strong contender for her pulling away and clamping down lots of more information here about how to deal with an OAL (if you feel this applies to you).

Catsu - this does not sound like a problem that needs fixing, honestly.

It absolutely doesn't merit faffing about expressing, or changing to block feeding, or worries about hind/foremilk.

Frequent green poos are on the normal spectrum; your doctor has confirmed your dd is fine. You have no health worries about her, either.

She is sometimes distressed and wriggly and more so recently - this could be her cold or possibly just a behavioural phase.

There is nothing inherently wrong in frequent green poos.

The risk with deliberate block nursing (one side only for a period of several hours) is that it will reduce your supply - now this may not matter a jot, and your baby may just feed more often to compensate, but it may matter...why try to fix something that is so clearly not broken, from everything you say here, anyway?

Agree with Truth that OAL might be worth considering though. Fixing that might help.

Catsu · 27/11/2011 21:10

Thanks. I read the link and it does seem likely that I have an over active letdown from reading the description!
Dd is only really seeming uncomfortable and wriggly when i try to feed her and she seems hungry but also seems to not like the fast flow of milk.
Glad to hear that green poo is ok. It could well be her cold as it's not always green, just sometimes. Would be nice if there was a bit less poo though!!
I think I will try one of the suggestions on the link and catch the let down milk in a muslin just as dd starts feeding and see if that helps.

Def reassuring to hear that all sounds normal though! Just had a little panic that I hadn't picked up on something obvious and was causing dd stomach ache!
