Oversupply, help needed

I have an 8 week old DS who is exclusively BF. He had no problem latching on from the beginning and has gained weight quite quickly (3.92 lbs in 7 weeks).

He has always been very quick (no more than 5 minutes) and I have very leaky boobs that spray him and everything within a meter radius if he releases (unless it is at the end of the feed). Especially one boob has such a strong milk flow he very often chokes and starts coughing mid feed.

He's always had some belly troubles (I was assuming it was a bit of constipation as it seems to get worse if he doesn´t go with every feed), but lately it has been getting worse and he starts screaming as soon as he finishes feeding, and he tends to get very restless at the end of the day (nights are better but he has to sleep on top of me all night). He does have explosive poos which are sometimes are a bit greeny and, when he cries he arches his back and gets very tense muscles all over. He has also now started to la

I was looking into the green poo issue just now and came across some information about oversupply and most of it sounds exactly like the situation I have (except I don´t have sore books or plugged ducts - as far as I know). I am now banging my head for not having looked into this sooner as I assumed that babies tend to have digestive problems during the first 3 or 4 months (I feel sooo guilty!!).

I was reading the advice and it seems the solution is block feeding. However, given my milk supply I have always fed only from 1 boob and generally 2 consecutive takes on the same boob (especially the "naughty" very fast flowing one) as we were advised to start from the side of the last feed.

So, how many times can I be feeding from the same side? are there any other things I should be doing? How soon will my ds be able to feel the effects?

P.S.: Sorry for the long post, I thought the more information the better.

Don'y know if its any help but there was a bit on TV the othed day with older children with silent reflux they were all arching their back so it might be that.

Thanks Singleandproud I am sure the discomfort is caused partly by reflux, but I think this, and the other symptoms (explosive poo, gas, etc.) are due to the the excess intake of lactose.

Given the information I have found about oversupply (here www.llli.org/faq/oversupply.html), it seems that my producing too much milk means he is taking in too much air because the milk is going too fast into his mouth, and also too much lactose because he is not getting to the hind milk.

I had a horrific problem with oversupply for weeks and weeks (felt like eternity) search threads started by me and you'll be able to read them. I had great advice.

I block fed in 7 hour blocks per boob. When I swapped the first feed on that side would be awful but I had to keep a cloth/towel to leak into and catch the spray.

For me it did take over a month to work but it really did get better all of a sudden at 12 weeks things clicked into place and now we are ok as long as I use only one side per 1/2 feeds still.

It will get better and the Block feeding should help but you have to be very patient. I started off using 4 hour blocks and increased every couple of days if I didn't see any change.

You didn't mention if you are expressing at all but you need to be careful if you are as this can exacerbate the problem

Thanks for your reply TinyDiamond, good to know that someone has been there and back!

I have just done one "block" where he has been on the same side for the last 4 feeds and the last 2 feeds he has been sucking for 8 or 9 minutes, which is almost double the amount as his normal feeds and he has definitely taken less air, and I haven´t heard any gurgling as the milk was getting to his stomach.

I will do as suggested and start with maybe 4 hour blocks and increase from there. I am not expressing at all so this should not be a problem.

I will search for those previous threads and educate myself further! thanks again

Thanks
