8 week old crying during feeding. Gas or Reflux?

Hi, I need a bit of advice,

My twins are 8 weeks old, (they were born 6 weeks early so corrected are currently 2 weeks).

I have noticed one twin in particular starts to cry during feeds, they have 90% Formula with a little expressed breast milk.

Neither are fabulous at burping and both have had a tendency to trump whilst taking feeds. The cries start within 1 oz of their feed being taken and is getting worse, the one twin in particular is starting to reduce the volume she takes. Neither twin possets much at all.

Both are quite happy to lie on their backs, even after feeding, so I am reluctant to assume its silent reflux, but just don't know. The cries are heartbreaking and can take a few minutes to calm her down once they start, can gas pain during feeding hurt that much?

i should be less clueless as I have 2 older dc's but they were both ebf and I could let them suckle at the breast for comfort whenever but these twins are another set of learning entirely! Any ideas or advice much appreciated

can't give much advice, I'm afraid, s I'm a novice too!

But my 4 week old is pretty similar - no great at burping (getting better I think / hope) and trumps like a trooper. I'm pretty sure he gets reflux too - some coughing on lying flat and he sometimes looks like he has borught something unpleasant up his throat, grimaces and smacks his lips (no idea if that's a symptom or not).

Yesterday he was cluster feeding and hadn't slept much overnight or during the morning and at noon, he was on the booby, but crying on. Latch, suck suck suck, cry / grizzle / suck / scream blue murder when the nipple popped out. It took me a couple of frustrating minutes to click that he was exhausted rather than windy (windy too tho poor wee man). He has done it again tonight and again was much more settled after a break for a sleep (daddy took him, winded him and returned after 20 mins with a much more relaxed baby).

I also give him infacol when he's like this just in case!

Good luck with ur twins!!

Fiolondon thanks for the post, I do have those Dr Brown bottles with the tube down it - anti colic bottles, i haven't used them much, I've just stuck with the old Avent bottles, but it is a good idea, I'll try them.

MissusTulip I am thinking that the younger babies are not so good at bringing up wind, mine seem to be getting better as they get older. your 4 week old actually sounds like my eldest dd when she was newborn, she was no good at all at settling and was also really windy but I didn't know because she was so bad at bringing it up - i assumed there wasn't much there! Oh what a mistake that was. My midwife told me breastfed babies will suckle suckle suckle when they are windy because it helps push it through downwards - i.e. out through the other end, I don't think my twins are getting the same comfort from the bottle teat.

I have made a monumental effort to really burp them as well as I can and I am surprised at how much wind does come up with the manic perserverence! they seem a bit better today, although still a bit fussy, I've just started infacol too. Does your baby posset much? the behaviour on lying down could be reflux but also the discomfort of a bubble stuck somewhere...
