Possible posterior tongue tie - DD 20 weeks

I had awful problems breastfeeding my DD in the middle, and with lots and lots of help and breastfeeding support group etc I believe I got positioning correct.

Despite this my DD ALWAYS clicks during feeding, and when sucking her thumb, and has alwyas distorted my nipple into a lipstick/wedge shape.

However, her growth is fine (she's a happy chubby little thing), she does feed at least every 2 hours day and night however.

Is it worth seeing someone about a possible posterior tongue tie given that she is gaining weight OK and I now have minimal discomfort, although I have to pay particular attention to positioning, and she feeds very frequently - which may or may not be related?

And HOW would I go about getting it diagnosed/treated/dismissed? In Gloucesterhsire...

hmmm I really don't know myself abt tonguetie (hopefully someone will be along to help sort you better with that) ...however, dd 18weeks still clicks a lot when she feeds too even tho she's otherwise thriving...it's because we\ve got oversupply/fast flow issues. Is it possible this might be a problem for you also?

No, not oversupply - no spurting, dribbling of milk etc. And I'm not sure that would cause nipple distortion.

I had fantastic advice from Charlie at milk matters. You can Google for her website. We aren't close to her but she did a consult over the phone using photos I emailed.

Also baby was gaining weight well but I couldn't take the soreness anymore. That combined with worries of speech problems in the future. I would rather he has a wee quick snip now rather than an operation when he is 2 under general anesthetic. Its also important to see someone that knows what they are talking about in terms of tt. I had a good number of gps, Hv, midwives tell me Ds's mouth was normal. Hope this helps :-)

Thanks I shall google away :)

OP - I had similar to you and saw a lactation consultant (Ann Dobson) who did the TT at 17 weeks.

I think it's up to you really, if you're not in too much discomfort (I remember I had good days and bad days).

We had improvement, but I still had to pay careful attention to positioning.

Do it, do it, do it.

DS1 is now 6yo and suffering the effects of undiagnosed tongue tie and a high palate. The high palate may have been caused by the tongue tie. It certainly was not the result of bottles, dummies or thumb sucking, because he had only a handful of bottles of expressed milk and didn't use a dummy or suck his thumb.

He has:

-Severe reflux and aerophagia
-Sleep apnea with associated headaches, pins and needles and aching limbs
-Congestion, pain, noise in ears with hearing loss

  • he was prone to croup when he was younger
  • periods of prolonged illness for weeks at a time with one thing after another

All of these are linked to his tongue tie and/or high palate. I have only recently pieced this together after reading this website

I am currently documenting his symptoms to take to a private consultation with a paediatric surgeon. It is a long list Sad

He will need a general anaesthetic to have his tongue tie operated on. He will need swallowing therapy and probably rapid palatal expansion to correct his high palate.

And funnily enough, his speech is absolutely great, apart from the tiniest lisp. He can lick an ice cream and stick his tongue out, which is what all the mainstream HCPs seem concerned about. Hmm

Oh, and although we didn't have a trouble free breastfeeding experience, we still managed. But it's not just about the feeding.

Actually, I am going to put pics of his tt and palate on my profile.

I am not trying to scare you. Of course, things will not come to this for every case of tongue tie, but it's not worth waiting to find out!!
