Has anyone got any opinions on:

  1. advent
  2. mam
  3. dr brown
  4. heberman feeder

Only ever used avent of those 4. I wasn't keen on Avent - didn't notice a blind bit of difference between Avent and Boots bottles, except that the Avent teats were harder to wash!. The Dr. Brown ones are quite hard to wash too, but some people swear by them for coliccy babies.

PrincessPeaHead · 04/01/2006 22:55

Avent are apparently rejected by more babies because the teats are quite hard and unyielding. They are extremely well marketed and distributed though, so the highest selling.
I had 50,000 (seemed like it anyway!) avent bottles which ds1 had used with no problem, which my ds2 REFUSED to take, point blank, so I went out and bought a load of tommee tippee wide necked ones which he decided were fine. the teats were noticeably softer though (still silicon).

Re the anticolic ones - haven't used them I'm afraid.

good idea. I'd get a basic one as sold in whatever supermarket you use as well, because if he/she is happy with that it makes life much easier when buying extras/spare teats/faster flowing teats etc. that's how I ended up with tommee tippee.

Dr browns/babybfree bottles saved my sanity, 6 weeks of purte hell with dd screaming everytime we fed her and flattening teats within seconds, the day we switched to dr browns she was a different baby they are fiddly to wash but now I am used to them much easier and I put them in the dishwasher now anyway. They also do handles and spouts from the website so you can turn the bottles into a trainer cup.

I tired loads of others and she just did not like them

thanks everyone - i'll let you know how we get on

MAM ULTIVENT TEAT

it is the only one

mazzystar · 06/01/2006 19:59

only used avent and had no problems.

InAHurry · 10/01/2006 15:02

Koala, how did you get on with your new teats? A couple of people on here have recommended 'Mam' for reluctant bottle feeders. My dd2 is one of those, has so far only had the breast. Is the Mam the best option for her i.e. most like a breast??

koalabear · 10/01/2006 19:46

For my 7 week old, the best teat was the heberman feeder, then the avent, and then the dr brown, and last, the mam

The heberman feeder (also the most expensive), was most like the breast in that it had a little vacuum teat so the milk only came out when my DD wanted it to (as with the breast).

This is the one I am going with whilst I continue to breast feed. When I stop breastfeeding I will move to the avent ones (because they are a lot cheaper than the heberman, and feed a lot quicker also).

The dr brown was a bit of a FAF, and she HATED the teat. The teat on the MAM was better, but the the bottle system (with all the vents at the bottom of the bottom) allowed the milk to pour out of the teat and practically drown the little love. The teat was good, but it wasn't like breast feeding at all because of the flow.

Hope this helps

dd's mam ultivents leak if I do not put in the white rubber seal in properly or screwed the bottom bit on correctly. But to assemble it correctly is really easy and quick once you realise what the pitfalls of them can be. I rave about these bottles.

Marne · 10/01/2006 21:47

Always used Avent and tommee tipee (nubby teats).

LipstickMum · 10/01/2006 21:51

Koala, thank you for all that lovely information, I am heading to Boots tomorrow to check out all these options

LipstickMum · 10/01/2006 21:55

Koala, i've just looked at a picture of the haberman and the teat part is very long... you're sure baby doesn't think it's weird??? It's so unlike a nipple - well, mine at least! I appreciate that for bf babies it's all about the sucking action etc.

koalabear · 11/01/2006 00:00

yes, the haberman looks VERY weird, but it does actually work really well - the baby does not take the whole length into her mouth

i ordered it online (a hefty £17) as it was recommended in the book "the babywhisperer" for mixed feeding (breast and bottle) which is what I am doing as this bottle lets the baby control the flow rather than the bottle dictating the speed at which the baby must drink - i didn't do this for my first child, and wish that i had

the nipple is quite soft and my DD squishes it in her mouth - although i think it is more about flow than the actual shape of the teat (or at least it is for my DD anyway)

OP posts:
LipstickMum · 11/01/2006 18:50

Ok, I am ordering,
1 Haberman Feeder,
1 Mam Ulti vent,
1 Nuk standard neck with a latex teat for 6+ months.

Have got nothing to lose!

It was great bf-ing until 6 months, but now I am really beginning to feel the strain. Almost 2 weeks into weaning, which is a hard slog, she wont open her mouth to anything! So, dd2 is still getting most of her nutrition from me and I am exhausted and thin

koalabear · 11/01/2006 19:31

a wise old mum said to me when i started weaning DS1 (and getting very upset that he wouldn't eat), to remember that for a good few months its all just about experimentation with textures and flavours, and that most of the nutrition will still come from the milk (and stay that way until they are about 1 yr old!) - so don't worry, lipstikmum, it sounds like your DD is right on track

OP posts:
bundle · 11/01/2006 19:33

we had lots of success (and other mums i've recommended them to) with playtex teats/disposables

matnanplus · 11/01/2006 19:40

I have used all tho the Hebermann feeder only for a baby with a cleft lip.

I prefer the DrBrown or Tommee Tippee Health check bottle which equalises the air to milk so that baby doesn't need to pause while feeding, tho there teats are ok i pften use them with the MAM ULTIvent teats as these are closest to the natural nipple shape while nursing.

Avent--yuk, have had many babies reject them or latch on poorly and so still be windy and the teat is so hard.

LipstickMum · 12/01/2006 13:17

Thanks Koala. It's so easy to forget how it went the first time round, I honestly feel like this is my first baby! I think I wouldn't be so stressed about the food if she were taking some milk from a bottle, it just increases her need for breastmilk which I am now finding exhausting as she is needing so much more.
I'll let you know how I get on when the bottles come.
