Green breastmilk today-why?

Only thing I can think of is that I had curry last night could this be it? Also I could only express 3oz off whereas I usually get 5. Connected? Didn't realise it was green until I transferred it to bag. Really very green. Like a minty colour.

Was it a spinachy curry? Saag something? Spinach has a lot of green pigments in it (just look at water used to boil it in!), it's no bad thing, a bit odd to look at though. For a pinky breastmilk, try beetroot!

Also, curry is often quite salty, which may well have left you dehydrated, hence the loss of volume.

Nope no saag just heavily spiced sholay (chick pea) dry curry and some samosa. Nothing green coloured at all apart from a few peas in samosas.

I have heard green breastmilk can sometimes be a sign of infection.

inmysparetime · 20/11/2011 12:01

Only if it smells or tastes funny, you'd know if you had an infection as your boobs would be hot and swollen.

TinyDiamond · 20/11/2011 12:35

No I feel fine and it smelled fine so dont think that's it. Will put it down to food. Seems to have really upset dd aswell usually she's fine with it but obviously not that dish! Sorry MIL!

It can be caused by food/drink or sometimes by medications, have you taken anything new? I've read that kelp is one of the things that can turn your milk green, I don't know how often it's used in Indian food or what form it needs to be in to make your milk turn green.

Have you tasted it?

EauRouge · 20/11/2011 13:19

Your milk, I mean. Not kelp.

Curry would not cause lack of milk - no matter how dehydrating unless for some reason the mother deliberately did not drink to slake thirst for days.

Variations in milk volume expressed are normal.

Agree that food and meds and vit supps can cause green milk. Not normally anything to worry about anyway :)

Also realised that I took a new b vit supplement last thing yesterday and now feel embarrassed as this is clearly what it was just didn't think Blush

My milk was a variety of colours, green included. I never worried about it - just presumed it was due to what I'd eaten. What's really funny is when your EBF baby's nappy smells of curry... Fenugreek is potent stuff if it can get through one digestive system, into the milk, through the baby, and still perfume the nappy!! :)
