to wonder why some people are against bf

I've just seen a few threads this morning, i must be quite sheltered I've not come across anyone before who is against bfeeding,

but read a few on here , and it seems to be people of the older persuasion who I would have thought would have been more for it.

Have you come across people who are against bf? What were their reasons?

Could you not read any of the thousand threads written on this topic?

HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 18/11/2011 10:25

how do you know they are 'older'? we dont put our ages on our posts.

fivegomadindorset · 18/11/2011 10:25

And what is your AIBU question?

HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 18/11/2011 10:26

also interested in hearing how being older is a persuasion? surely that is out of anybody's control?

shagmundfreud · 18/11/2011 10:28

In my experience people are against breastfeeding because it involves BREASTS. Which in this country are considered, you know, a bit RUDE.

Also breastmilk is a bodily fluid, which is often compared to wee when people are having debates about why you shouldn't bf in public. Even in such an enlightened and forward thinking place as mumsnet. Hmm

So rude AND dirty.

Oh good. I thought I was going to have to get through my boring work day without a massive fight to entertain myself with.

Thanks for the post OP. Thanks

MeconiumHappens · 18/11/2011 10:48

Because its somene getting their 'fun bags'out innit. And its a bit paedofidlia.

FredFredGeorge · 18/11/2011 10:48

HeresTheThingBooYoo Don't you know you're only as old as you feel, so you need to be persuaded to feel old. Reading the daily mail does it I believe.

Hullygully · 18/11/2011 10:51

Because it is plain UNNATURAL AND WRONG

StealthPenguin · 18/11/2011 10:51
exaspomum · 18/11/2011 11:09

Because older people don't want to feel guilty about bottle-feeding their babies back in the dark ages when there was less knowledge about the benefits of BF. Also they want to bottle feed your baby themselves as they enjoy it. And they feel threatened by the fact that they know next to nothing about BF. (Which isn't their fault.) And they're uncomfortable at seeing you BF. It's a shame.

NinkyNonker · 18/11/2011 11:19

I don't think many are actively against it, just not for it.

That and we have weird ideas about breasts in this country...ok on the beach, in a nightclub, on page 3...but not when feeding a baby.

difficulttimes · 18/11/2011 11:24

Didn't more people bf in the past though, I was of the idea that more people ff from the word go because they 'don't want to sag'.
I stand corrected though I though FF was more of a last resort rather than a first.

actually I did know one person who ff because it was 'easier' and would often comment on how small baby was /long I fed for.

why do you care? I don't understand why people are so hung up on this.
get a life

LadyBeagleEyes · 18/11/2011 11:34

As an older person may I just say I've hardly ever seen anyone that is against it, it's just not for them.
And so far there have been a few ageist posts on this thread which I find very insulting, especially exaspomum.
There is a bf/ff topic for a reason, please go there.

difficulttimes · 18/11/2011 12:22

I'm just asking out of interest

OP posts:
difficulttimes · 18/11/2011 12:25

I thought this may turn into a bunfight

mentioning age is not ageist either Hmm

Hmm

I've been thinking about this thread since it appeared.

And actually, I think it's not only a perfectly reasonable question, but, a question that BFing advocates should understand the answers to.

Therefore, whether the OP was trolling or not is slightly irrelevant. Of course this has been done to death here IF you are here frequently. But BFing awareness comes to us when it comes to us and there are new visitors to this area of MN all the time.

For instance, the OP has been ticked off for saying that the "older generation" are more likely to be "against" breastfeeding. Of course we don't like generalisations. But, it is a fact that there are around two generations of people who were told that formula is actually superior to breastmilk (before limitations on its marketing were introduced).

This is an important historical fact. Of course it doesn't mean that "the older generation" are against breastfeeding and in fact there are many "older" people who are passionate BFing advocates. But it is a historical fact and an important one to understand in order to appreciate where we are now with the current generation's understanding of formula which has been passed from parent to child.

It is vitally important that BFing advocates understand the background to people's feelings about BFing and formula, and from where they have obtained their knowledge about artificial milks. Therefore perhaps we should be more open in discussing how we have reached where we are with abysmal BFing rates and a scary lack of awareness of the risks of the widespread use of formula.

I'll no doubt have this post used as an example of me being anti-formula, which again will be another rather dull bingo card tick, as well as being untrue. It's reactions like that that put people off asking these important questions. So please don't, because it's tedious and misses my point completely.
