I've been thinking about this thread since it appeared.
And actually, I think it's not only a perfectly reasonable question, but, a question that BFing advocates should understand the answers to.
Therefore, whether the OP was trolling or not is slightly irrelevant. Of course this has been done to death here IF you are here frequently. But BFing awareness comes to us when it comes to us and there are new visitors to this area of MN all the time.
For instance, the OP has been ticked off for saying that the "older generation" are more likely to be "against" breastfeeding. Of course we don't like generalisations. But, it is a fact that there are around two generations of people who were told that formula is actually superior to breastmilk (before limitations on its marketing were introduced).
This is an important historical fact. Of course it doesn't mean that "the older generation" are against breastfeeding and in fact there are many "older" people who are passionate BFing advocates. But it is a historical fact and an important one to understand in order to appreciate where we are now with the current generation's understanding of formula which has been passed from parent to child.
It is vitally important that BFing advocates understand the background to people's feelings about BFing and formula, and from where they have obtained their knowledge about artificial milks. Therefore perhaps we should be more open in discussing how we have reached where we are with abysmal BFing rates and a scary lack of awareness of the risks of the widespread use of formula.
I'll no doubt have this post used as an example of me being anti-formula, which again will be another rather dull bingo card tick, as well as being untrue. It's reactions like that that put people off asking these important questions. So please don't, because it's tedious and misses my point completely.
