whats your expressing routine?

Just wanting to find out what works for others? DD is 3 weeks old & bf going v well so far, she's put on a load of weight already! I've started expressing in the morning (about 4oz) as soon as I can after her first feed of the day and the DH gives her this in a bottle at night time so I can sleep. So far working quite well, but I wake in the night covered in milk (!) as its been ages since I last fed her! How often would you express a day and should I worry about this affecting my milk supply?

I think you should be okay. Your supply will adjust itself to cover the expressing in the morning and I think the same will happen in the evening if you continue to miss that feed, so eventualot you'll stop leaking in the night.

Can you express before bed and build up a store for freezer?

MotherPanda · 19/11/2011 17:15

every day i express (in bed) after the first feed, and then if i need to build up more i will express just before bed.

Those are certainly my milkiest times.

your supply will fit into whatever pattern you tell it to - so mine knows it has to make 6oz and a full feed first thing in the morning (they are rock solid when i wake up!).

very interested to read this. may i briefly hijack to ask when one can start an 'expressing routine'. it's taken us a while to get bf on track (ds is now 6 weeks) but as we're almost there i'd like to be able to start regularly expressing and just wondered if it's too late to start now? how's the best way to go about it?

Thanks for your replies, if I'm not too tired I might try some expressing in the evenings.

Lookout, think it will be ok to give expressing a go, they may not like the bottle to start with but worth perserving to give you a break. Good luck!
