Old problem:

So I finally figured out that if I need to express 300mls at work between 12 and 12:30 I have to eat 'lunch' at 10.

New problem: nipples very sore while BFing.

Is it possible for a 5 mo to suddenly forget what a good latch is? How do I fix it?

Erm - any chance you're pregnant? :)

Graciescotland · 16/11/2011 12:39

I went through a raw stage, I think DS had the suction of a Dyson though, super fast feeds and a bit of gumming down as he'd started to teeth. No real advice but it only lasted a few weeks for me.

entropygirl · 16/11/2011 15:28

GAH organic no no no no no no.....

never doing THAT again.

Yup suction seems to massively outstrip necessity.

LOL Sorry entropy. It's just on my mind having moaned to by BFC for 3 1/2 months about sore nips, with her saying are you SURE you're not pregnant. And I was/am :)

OK, it's possibly teething in that case. You might try going back to basics - cradle hold if you can - nose to nipple - wide gape - those sorts of things and see if a good, deep latch makes it feel better?

entropygirl · 16/11/2011 16:51

So you are pregnant now?

Yep, 16 weeks. Found out a fortnight ago (what a lemon).

entropygirl · 16/11/2011 17:22

Congratulations!! How many is that?

I am insanely jealous of anyone who could get to 14 weeks and not know it! I was puking my guts up for 2 months already by that point...

My DD is almost 5 mths and she stsrted having a lazy latch recently, you just need to be strict and go back to basics.

Congratulations OCC!

organiccarrotcake · 17/11/2011 13:12

Thanks Eglu :) This will be number 3, ent. Mad, I know.

Also had a rough time with the last carrot, so V pleased myself to have passed that :)

How do you feel about going back to basics ent?

entropygirl · 17/11/2011 14:28

3 huh! Thats what DH has his heart set on - but Im struggling to survive just one! Congrats again!

I had a go last night at back to basics. She is just very quick though...launching at the boob, burying her face right in (sometimes with some painful head shaking) and then grabbing a handful to secure her grip (somewhat embarrassed to have boobs that you can grab a handful of).

I think a part of the problem is the suction not being released while she turns right around, presumably to check no-one stole the rest of the universe while she wasn't looking, causing some serious nipple stretch and snap back.
I am trying hissing screaming when she does this and there does seem to be a decrease in incidents.

Am actually seriously considering giving up on BF, not due to this, but because I think I need to take the anti-depressants I was prescribed two months ago (DH is absolutely not prepared to allow both at the same time).

So maybe, although I will miss it so much, this is just time to call it a day.

If you have been prescribed medication, and your GP knows you are BFing, why does your DH have an issue?

I wouldn't be very happy if my husband put pressure on me not to take prescribed medication.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

RufflesKerfluffles · 18/11/2011 09:41

If you want to stop bf-ing then that's fine, but if you don't want to, I'd explore other options first as you don't want to regret it later. Could your DH perhaps ring the BFN drugs and breastfeeding helpline? He'd get to speak to a pharmacist, so might reassure him?
