Quick question about making up a bottle (sorry - I know done to death!)

Can I make up a bottle by putting in half the boiled water (left to cool for 20-30 mins) into the bottle adding the formula and mixing, then topping up with cold tap water. (dd is 6 months so can have tap water).

Of course using the full amount of water by measuring the 2nd part using a second bottle.

The initial hot water kills off any bacteria in the milk surely.

Thoughts please - Thank you Smile

To be on the safe side, if I was going to do what you suggest, I'd use cooled boiled water rather than tap water. (TBH I've only ever made up bottles using warm boiled water though (ie not mixing it with cold water).

I would say so.

IIRC we just put tap water into DD's bottles when she was about 7/8 months. They eat so much crap off the floor at that point anyway!

Not an expert, but I think the point of the near-boiling water is to kill any bacteria in the milk powder not as most people assume to kill nasties in the water (of which there are very few)

My sil did this with bottled water- did no harm to her ds, who is a big lad for his age now - aged 3 he looks about 5!! I personally think it's a good idea Smile

This is how I make DD2's bottles but I don't tend to wait the 20 or so minutes for the boiled water to cool. I also use cooled boiled water for the topping up bit rather than straight from the tap - eventhough she's now 9 months old and has been drinking tap water since 6 months old.

You might want to check that the boiled water is still hot enough after 20-30 minutes (over 70c) but I think that method is fine.
