Worried Mummy

My DS is 4 weeks old and is b/f. He has had terrible wind (worse than usual) over the last few days, he seems to be in such pain it's unbearable. The infacol seems to take the edge off but I'm worried that this is my doing as I've been eating a tad too much spicy food in the last few days - keep forgetting that what I eat is detrimental to his milk (spicy fajitas and a lot of onion based meals over the last days). Feeling awful and don't know what to do. He's also got a blocked nose now as DH and I have the cold - feeling lousy that he's so poorly.

Anyway - DH suggested that I formula feed him until my milk is let's say 'less acidy' and express in the meantime.
Haven't a clue what to do, I see my H/V tomorrow but until then any suggestions pls.

Feel like crap

noooo, don't formula feed, it will dimish your own milk and then it will be really hard to get it back again.
I f you start eating less spicey stuff now then the milk you produce will be less spicey for the next feed.

when my babies have had wind i found the lying flat across my knees position good for them.
Not sure waht else you have done to help- it will settle, honest.
Just go with the flow and cut down on the spice if you think tht has been amking it worse. Alos make sure he is latching on well and not gulping too much air with feeding.
{smile]

They're often windy at this age, it may well be nothing to do with your milk.

If he's used to exclusive B/F, then formula will be even more of a shock to his gut, and will upset him more.

Oh poor you and little one... but I personally wouldn't swap over to formula for this - it could be his cold making him feel poorly, and you're doing a great job breastfeeding.

Does anyone have hard facts on spicy food making babies windy? What do people do in cultures where curry is a major part of the diet? Had a discussion with my mum about this only this morning... I am due today with my 4th baby

IMHO best thing to do would be to try & get some sleep in between feeds - then have you got a sling that dh could carry him in - I found that for my babies, being upright really helped them get wind up & the movement was comforting for them.

Sure someone more professional will be along in a minute... in the meantime - good luck

another thing i did was to feed for 5 mins then burp the baby then put back onto boob.
do this for each side.
that helped alot as the wind was easy to get up at the beginning before all the milk went in.
does that make sense, sorry busy here, but want to give you a bit of support with BF as it is such a great thing to do

ChaCha · 02/01/2006 13:20

Another reason why i just love MN Thank you ladies.

Yet more encouragement on the b/f front. Was feeling so guilty just wanted to pack it all in last night - my nipples were really sore and was feeling lousy with the cold. It really is about perceverence isn't it?

Thank you all so much. I saw DH put him on his tummy last night so will start doing that too and see what works. Great advice for his blocked nose too. Feeling much better already.

I eat loads of spicey food and never has affected it. Look up kellymoms site- that has stuff about spicey food.

ChaCha · 02/01/2006 13:31

I should get some 'snufflebabe' then. Is there any other recommendations for baby's blocked nose/cold?

And congratulations on baby no.4

Oh, and Chacha, keep an eye out for thrush if your nipples are getting sore... there will be white stuff inside baby's cheeks or roof of mouth - I've managed to have it with each of mine - easy to treat but so painful til you do!!

mandymac · 02/01/2006 13:41

Take the baby into the bathroom with you when you are showering. I leave the shower running for a few minutes with the door shut before I go in with dd, then pop him in her bouncy chair while I shower. Maybe your DH could do the same so he gets 2 lots of steam. Raise the head end of his cot/moses basket (rolled towel under the mattress) - this might help with his digestion too . Finally, I got some baby olbas oil and put a few drops on a wet jay cloth and draped them over the radiator whichever room we were in.

You can also get saline drops from the chemist to drop into babies nose about 10 mins before a feed, if the blocked nose is making feeding more difficult for him (I would check this with Chemist/GP first to check it is OK for her age).

Hope this helps.

Just wanting to echo others in saying well done, keep going, you're doing great. It's no fun when they have a cold but some of the tips here will certainly relieve the worst of it and it will get better. You might even get a smile from DS in the next few weeks, it will make it all seem so worthwhile

CorrieDale · 02/01/2006 19:33

From what I remember, the saline drops should be ok at this age - but only if your DS is at the dry chunky stage of snottiness (TMI - sorry!) I used them once when my DS had a very wet snuffle, and he spluttered for England. Also: re: Snufflebabe. Brilliant product (only 3 months and up though) and you need to watch out for your LO getting it in his mouth if you put it on your breast. Menthol is really bad for babies if they ingest it. And I think that Olbas Oil is only for over 3 months too, but could well be wrong. I found that raising the head of the cot worked really well when DS got his first cold - I shoved telephone directories under the feet of his cot. Finally (sorry - this all sounds really preachy - isn't meant to!) formula is likely to just make the poor little mite even more mucousy - probably hard to believe but there you go! Something to do with dairy I think. If it's any consolation, DS has had only one bad cold and he's 6 months now, while I've had about 4 in the same time - so BF really does give protection! Though not to mummies, sadly!

It is possible nothing to do with what you're eating. And more to do with his blocked nose making him swallow more air in when feeding. DS (now 5 months) was an awfully windy baby and I found that holding him upright and against me, tummy to tummy, and walking/bouncing helped bring up the wind. Do you have a sling/baby carrier? If so, strap him to you and just go about your daily stuff or for a walk. He may bring up some of the wind.

For blocked noses (which DS permenantly has!) we use Baby Olbas oil on a tissue near his cot which seems to help. It certainly helps DH and I!

It sounds like you're doing really well. persevere - I'm glad everyone on here convinced me to and answered my question. breastfeeding is (mostly!) lovely now.
