BF and ibuprofen

Sorry, it seems that I'm always asking questions about drugs and bf!
Ds is 21 weeks, fully breastfed (only) so feeds quite often. Return of AF - I know that I can take paracetamol, but that's not really doing the business - I always thought ibuprofen wasn't ok, but tought I'd check? Please?

Ive just had a baby by Cs and am Bf and was told by GP and hospital I coudl take ibuprofen. But you shoudl check out the kellymom website for inof about drugs and BF - its great! Despite the silly name its very scientific and fact based with links to reports of clinical trials etc

Well done on the Bf BTW. Its such a pain to have AF again isn't it? ( unless you are TTC of course)Mine came back at 7 1/2 months ( after i started baby on solids)

I was told no for Ibuprofen.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2006 11:10

I think iboprofen goes through in your milk. But not in great quantities. I would (and do) take it from time to time.

Codeine + paracetamol is also ok, and quite strong.

Helen38 · 02/01/2006 11:21

I was given it in the hospital after c-sec so asumed was ok

MummyDayDream · 02/01/2006 11:21

Just checked Kellymom, and that suggests it is ok. Obviously, I'll only take it when I really need it. Thanks for the info, and what a brilliant website - I've tended to avoid it until now, as the title put me off!

Know what you mean Mummy. I thought it woudl be one of these gushing American sites about the joys of Bf. ( apologies to any americans ).

NQC - agree about the paracetemol and codeine, as was also given this by the hospital on discharge. But anything with codeine in it can make you a bit constipated. But might be ok if you only need it for a day or so ( for painful AF I mean, not CS!!!)

Laura032004 · 02/01/2006 19:13

I've always taken ibuprofen whilst bf (was prescribed voltarol post c/s which is a v.strong NSAID I think?). Actually that sounds like a daily habit, but YKWIM!

Is it asprin that is an absolute no no?

tamum · 02/01/2006 19:14

I took ibuprofen pretty much round the clock for months when I was bfing dd. All on medical advice. Again, we were given it in hospital after childbirth, and I haven't found any reports of problems in the medical literature. I wouldn't worry about the odd pill at all.

CorrieDale · 02/01/2006 19:15

This is another really good site: this

If it doesn't work then sorry, just can't seem to do links. It's the Breastfeeding Network - Drugline.

julienetmum · 02/01/2006 19:53

BF specialist HV's round here say ibuprofen is the drug of choice for breastfeeding mums with for example mastitus.

sazhig · 02/01/2006 20:01

Yes its ok to take (& actually recommended for mastitis). I wanted to take it for the same reason a few months ago & so my dh called the LLL helpine for me (as I felt too 'orrible to do it myself). Lovely lady looked it up for us & called us back a few minutes later saying it was ok, but I've forgotten what she said was the max per day you could have - Call the bf lines or the BFN drug line - they should be able to confirm how much is ok

MummyDayDream · 02/01/2006 20:30

Thank you all so much for your advice; what would I do without MN???
