3 yo latch is suddenly awful

DD's latch this morning was suddenly appalling - felt as though her tongue was rubbing me, was really painful and had to stop. Luckily she's at pre-school all day today so can avoid any more latching on for a bit anyway, but just wondering what's going on. Nipple is still a bit sore but looks fine (or did in shower earlier). I bfed through pregnancy and her latch got a bit lazy/toothy then but nothing like this. Is she forgetting how to do it properly/preparing to self-wean or just getting lazier?

Hey DVC - I googled this exactly last night because my DD has started doing the same (3 in Jan - but you know me... & her so you know that).

It feels like she's forgetting how to do it. She keeps coming off as though she has lost the vacuum (terrible description sorry) and goes back on.

I have no idea though, I googled "what does it feel like when toddler loses latch?" and got a very bizarre list of webpages - not all useful.

My DD was ill last night, raging temp, so I thought she'd be latched on permanently but she kept doing the "falling off" thing.

Fingers crossed for weaning here too Smile

Same here. DD1 has had a really lazy latch for a few months. I have to keep reminding her to sit still and sit on my lap. Things are improving but every so often she'll slip up if she's distracted. I doubt she'll self-wean any time soon, she's a very enthusiastic nurser.

Thanks ladies :)

Kelly (hello!) I'm sure I've read people on here saying that sometimes weaning involved their DC just sort of forgetting how to do it. Might have a search later and see if I can find anything. I do know someone who bfed through pregnancy then I think her DS stopped for a couple of weeks right at the end and by the time her DD was born he'd forgotten how to latch on - she said he tried a couple of times but just blew raspberries and giggled and that was it.

Eau DD is also a very enthusiastic nurser, far more so than 15 wk DS Hmm but ...

... so she was at preschool all yesterday and didn't actually ask for boob until bedtime (always nurse her to sleep or in bed even if she doesn't actually fall asleep). Nipple still sore - feels like burning - but not as bad. She was knackered so asleep in a few mintues. This morning she came and got into bed with us at 5.30 as she has been doing for the past few weeks but I refused to nurse her until DH's alarm went off at 7.30, which she took better than expected. She nursed at half seven but not for very long iirc. Then I realised when I fed her this evening that she hadn't asked all day. She has never been a morning-and-evening-only feeder. Never. This evening she nursed for about 5-10 minutes then stopped and asked me to read to her instead

Fingers crossed this could be it for both/all of us ...
