Long gaps

Dd is 4 weeks old and EBF- a big girl 10lb 4 now and born at 8lb 2. Now I never want to wake a sleeping baby especially a big thriving one but yesterday she slept from 230pm until 8pm and then was very fussy until 1am. She then slept until 5am fed and back to sleep by 6 - she is still asleep. I am very worried about this change in schedule and was wondering - should I wake her to protect my supply!

That is a long gap, and may be a one off. I'd probably wake her to try to keep her in more of a daytime - awake, nighttime - asleep routine (aah, the routine word) not because I believe in routines per se (I don't), but more to gently guide her into day and night. At the same time trying to not let more than 3 hours during the day go past without her feeding is best really (newborns her age are highly likely to be feeding much more often than that anyway). This will, as you say, help to maintain your milk.

Agree with organic, if she is sleeping for 5.5 hours, really you want this at night not in the afternoon. Also agree that really gaps of not more than 3 hours are best at this age too.

How has she fed and slept today?

gluttom · 10/11/2011 19:56

Wished I never posted this as her sleep has been terrible today - she has been just dozing on and off all day - she has fed well but is fussing again now and probably will til midnight Sad . Think I jinxed her sleep by posting this Grin

Hopefully though she will do that stretch again for you, only this time at night.

On the plus side she sounds like she is doing really well and everything you've said sounds perfectly normal. Have a look at this on What to expect in the early weeks and this on Cluster feeding.

Hope you do get that sleep tonight Smile.

still awake - now have the incredible awake baby - so frustrated.

Stick with it gluttom, you sound like you are doing a fab job and they change so quickly at this age.

Have you got anyone who could have her for an hour, even if its just to take her out for a walk after she's been fed?

I never let my dtds (10wo) go longer than 4 hours in the day but they happily go from 11.30pm to 6am at night (sometimes until 7am) and I don't wake them at night!

Thanks - DH is good - he is doing the night tonight except feeds. I can live with the feeds it is the wired behaviour that is not relaxing. X
