Nursing strike and won't take a bottle...cooking with ebm?

9mo dd has her 4 top teeth all trying to come through at once, poor thing. She's been on a nursing strike for 3 days now and screams in pain whenever we try and give her a bottle of ebm, formula or even water. She does take a bit but dribbles most of it out if we give her a cup to drink from. She is also refusing most solids, she'll only eat porridge which I make with full fat cow's milk.

Can I make porridge with ebf?! Don't really want to waste any of it as I'm getting less and less each day when I am pumping :( Really don't want to stop bf this early and am really worried about her dehydrating and not eating.

Your poor DD!! Bless her. I'm sure you can make up porridge with ebf, but just be wary of reheating in the microwave, as when I have done this it came out smelling a bit 'off' for want of a better word.

I assume you have already tried Calpol, nurofen, teething gels etc? We have always got on really well with the powders and I've heard others saying the same.

Will your DD nurse when she is sleepy or asleep? My DD has had a partial nursing strike before, but she would still feed in the night or take a good 'dream feed'.

After 3 days of refusing fluids, I would be concerned about the possibility of her becoming dehydrated. Is she still weeing ok?

Thanks, I ended up adding it to the porridge after it was cooked, seemed to be ok. Also made a few 'momsicles' with it, haven't tried them out on her yet!

What a weekend! Happy to report that she took a feed this morning after a 3 day strike - all is well in the world again :) Hope this doesn't happen every time she is teething!

Glad for a good outcome Scubamummy, and hope those teeth break through soon without too much more bother for her & you

Glad she is feeling better. You can cook with breast milk just don't bother microwaving it as it kills all the good bits inside.

I made my DD rice pudding with no sugar but added sultanas, chopped apple and cinnamon when she was teething. Your DD may like this as it is similar texture to porridge and gets some fruit in her and lots of milk.

You could also make lollies with pureed fruit to numb her sore mouth.

i swear by my little ones amber teething necklace, thought it was a load of mumbo jumbo but at the end of my techer i tried one and have never looked back, another thing i did whaen it was really bad was to freeze pieces of banana on lolly sticks, she loved them

Mampig · 07/11/2011 21:30

Don't mean to hijack- what age does your lo wear the necklace? I got one but then got too afraid to put it on him as I'm sceptical of how well it wud work? And risk of choking???Confused my ds is teething sorely ATM- wonder should I try it?

AngelDog · 07/11/2011 21:58

Teething necklaces aren't for chewing on - and they're designed to be too short to get in the LO's mouth.

You're not supposed to put them on when they're sleeping. The beads are usually knotted on so if the cord snaps, they don't all come off IYSWIM. Didn't do anything for my DS, but I'd say it's worth a try.

Sorry- choking was wrong word... Strangling??? But yeah- iswym- as long as they don't sleep in it, it would be ok. Will try mine and see!

AngelDog · 09/11/2011 11:20

Sorry, I thought I'd mention it as I used to think teething necklaces were for chewing on. Blush

Mampig · 09/11/2011 13:20

Well actually Angel, I did have to google it tbh!!!Blush

Noticed that this is a few days old but thought I'd reply anyway. Back when I had time to cook for DD I would often but EBM in it.

Easier if LO is having pureed food ofc but I would blend up some cooked veg and then add some EBM to make the consistency less dry. My mum wanted to put gravy in the food - I persuaded her that mummy milk was a much better choice. She used to eat it all up no problems.

My DD also used to have EBM on her weetabix in the morning as she is a bottle refuser too. Now she has cows milk as expressing was making me miserable.

Glad your DD has started feeding again :) Maybe this information will come in useful in the future - hopefully not though...
