Happened to my MIL, she thought BIL was a stomach upset Grin

Yes, DS2 was 5 months old and exclusively breastfed - periods had just returned when we conceived DS3. It took us while to work out what was going on though we had a negative pregnancy test at first. Finally worked it when I was almost 10 weeks!

Congratulations! Having them close together is lovely, you will be fine, it will be an intense but wonderful time!

tipsybonk · 06/11/2011 07:40

As my new nickname suggests liger, it's a bit early to tell yet Blush. Honestly, am blaming you lot as I'd been off the sauce since before I was preggers then read the thread about having wine when breastfeeding and...well....

My periods haven't returned yet though, so hoping that's a factor? We were planning to start trying again around DS's 1st birthday due to mine and DH's age and previous problems conceiving so this would certainly be sooner than anticipated!

It was common in the 'olden days' and meant that sibs would be very close -probably very hard work for you but in the end you will bring them up together almost as if they are the same age, so will probably get all the potty training etc...stuff done and dusted in one go?

Good luck!

liger · 06/11/2011 07:58

Wink. I was jumping the gun a bit and assuming the tipsiness had been several weeks back! A bit too early in the day for me to pick up on subtle clues im afraid! If it's meant to be ....

Hope you don't mind me joining this conversation, I am very jealous if you are Tipsy! We are trying for our second now and our little girl is 6 months and EBF. I haven't had a period and am doing ovulation tests but nothing yet....am getting impatient.

WoTmania · 10/11/2011 22:50

Just a quick correction gazzalw BF has been used as a method of child spacing for a long time.

OP the main conditions are:
1)baby is under 6 months
2)you are exclusively breastfeeding
3)no period yet (often periods that return pre-6months are anovulatory)

here

WoTmania · 10/11/2011 22:52

sorry didn't complete message: If those 3 conditions are met BF is a reliable form of contraception. Once they go more than 4 hours in daytime or 6 hours at night between feeds it's not effective, likewise once they start other foods and of course if your period is back it's likely you're fertile again

rainbow2000 · 11/11/2011 12:05

Yes happened to me there is a year between my eldest 2

amistillsexy · 11/11/2011 12:13

Hands up here too.

But I think I fell into the category outlined by WoTmania above- he was probably going longer between feeds by that time, although he was still abf and I hadn't had a period.

They are currently in the same class at school (aged 4 and 5-different year groups-small school!), and loving it. They play together and share a room. Having said that, the youngest works very hard to stay the baby!

As others have said, it is very hard work in some ways (Mine have an older brother with autism, which coloured our experience somewhat!), but in others it is easier-nappy changing the older child is easier than potty accidents, they have similar interests and needs, same TV programmes, toys and books, etc...and it gets easier as they get older.

Hope you get the result you want!

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 11/11/2011 12:13

My mum and her mum both did. Not me though, although I did try, it took me 9 months Grin DS was obv on food then too, but no other liquid

Catslikehats · 11/11/2011 12:19

Yes.

DD exclsuively BF
Periods not returned
Oh and I had had fertility treatment to conceive.

Found out when she was 8mths that I was 4mth pregnant.

Not what I thought I wanted at the time but turned out to be brilliant.

Hope things work out whochever way you want.

GingerbreadLatte · 11/11/2011 12:32

Doesnt the EBFing need to involve a certain number of night feeds to ensure that ovulation is prevented. I'm sure I read that if your baby sleeps for perids longer than a certain number of hours its not enough to guarantee no ovulation.

I might be wrong though

WoTmania · 11/11/2011 13:11

Gingerbread - see my post above :-). The other factor is that we are better nourished than ever before so our bodies are able to support another pregnancy more quickly. Dummy use another factor.
Ooooh, another thing - after 6 monthsish it's less likely that the first couple of periods will be anovulatory so you can get pg without having aperiods (see DS2 and DD Grin )

GingerbreadLatte · 11/11/2011 17:48

Thanks WoT. I missed that on your post :)
