Sore boob

Last night I noticed that one of my boobs felt a bit full, I thought nothing of it, assuming that DD2(6.5mo) must have just taken a smaller feed than usual.

This morning I fed her on that side & it was a bit uncomfortable & afterwards still felt big. So when she went for her nap I got my pump out & tried to express, but I got hardly anything out (around 20ml)

I then noticed I've got a white mark on my nipple, about 2mm diameter, which won't rub off. The other boob is fine & I can't see any white patches in DD2s mouth.

Do you think it could be thrush or mastitis?
I'm wondering if I should phone the dr now & try to get an appointment for this arvo, or if I should I leave it until after this afternoons feed (3pm ish) which would mean I wouldn't get an appointment until Friday.

Would a bf counsellor at a clinic be able to help?

Go straight to the doc. You DO NOT want mastitis!

If you think it's possibly a blocked duck then have a read hear www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/BFN_Mastitis.pdf there are lots of self help measures. You don't always need antibiotics if caught early.

Thrush normaly appears in both breast as you pass it from one side to the other.

Could it be a bleb?

bessie26 · 03/11/2011 14:11

Thanks for your help & links!

I'd never heard of a bleb before! I don't think it's that as the white bit is flat & milk is coming out of it (perhaps it was one?)

I went to see the nurse at my surgery, she didn't know decided to hedge her bets & gave me some fungal cream which I'm to start using straight away & also gave me some antibiotics incase it's mastitis, but i should only start those if I get any redness, raised temp, hot boob, or feeding becomes really really painful.

I've just had some ibruprofen with my lunch, next I'm going to lie on the bed eating chocolate & reading MN rest & get some air to my boob. Then I'll have a shower and feed on the bad boob & go from there - hopefully it's just a bad latch that's caused some nipple trauma & I'll be right as rain for the horrendously busy weekend I've got coming up....

If it is thrush then you need treatment for your baby to or you will just pass the thrush back and forth. This is why thrush normaly occurse in both breast as baby transfers it between the two.

If it was thrush, do you think I would have signs of it on the other boob by now?

Having a shower before getting DD2 to take a really big feed definitely helped, after another couple of feeds it had stopped feeling horribly big & sore. I've still got a white spot on one nipple (which is also a bit sore) although it is getting smaller.

I've still got my fx that this isn't anything sinister & is just some nipple trauma caused by a bad latch ( or perhaps DD2s insistence on trying to look behind her during a feed)

So about a week after my original post, I went to bed with a bad headache & woke up with a temp & feeling like I had flu. I started the AB for mastitis straight away & felt much better by the next day. I finished the course of pills a few days ago & still feel ok, so hopefully that's sorted. I'm going to see a bf councillor next week to get our latch checked incase that was the cause.

When I spoke to my GP she warned me that the ABs could disrupt DD2s sleep. Before I started taking them, she was sleeping 730pm-6am, now she's waking every 2-3hrs

If this is because of the ABs, does anyone have any idea how long this might go on for?
