9 mo nipping

My 9 mo (as of yesterday!) ds has started nipping when he is feeding. It's at the point where not only is it bloody sore, but my décolletage is covered in bruises as he nips HARD. really grabs the skin and pinches. :(

I've tried a firm no, but he just laughs. Help please.

DS1 did this at about that age. I followed the advice I read somewhere and it worked like a dream. Advice was

  1. As soon as they nip, calmly detach them, say a firm 'No' without looking them in the eye and put them down on the floor.
  2. Count (silently) to ten.
  3. Pick them up again (and resume feed if they haven't finished).

Do that each time they nip and they will stop. Make sure you don't squeal or anything when the nip happens, as that encourages them to think it's a game.

DS1 only nipped twice when I did this, and I never had to do it again.

Good luck!

Yes do exactly as wolf says, finger in corner of mouth to break the suction and gently put the child down. (be sure to resume feeding before they have chance to get upset) works like a charm.
The only other advice I'd offer is if you feed to sleep you need to learn to detach baby just as they drop off. DD2 would feel her head drop back and clamp her teeth on hard as she woke with a start, total reflex and very painful. I found you learnt to watch for her slowing right down and just slipped a finger in her mouth to stop her feeding and let her drop off having a hug, but not attached to me.

Thanks for the advice, although its not biting, it's actual nipping as in grabbing handfuls of skin and squeezing! Do you think the advice would still work? He's also found his daddy's skintag and nips and pulls on that when he's having a bottle!
