Help! What am I doing wrong? (tiktok - are you out there?)

My 11-week old DS (second baby) has pooed once every 3-5 days since about 1 or 2 weeks old, until last week. Suddenly he is pooing every couple of hours, day and night, and the poos are watery and green! Is this diarrhoea and if so is it a virus or something (and how long should this last?)

I got told that the green poo is too much hind milk and to change boob half way through feed, has stopped the green poo but we now have more solid poo which he struggles to pass - sorry that is not much help

Whoops - posted before I had finished! So, is it diarrhoea / virus (he has a bit if a snuffly nose, but has been pooing like this for the past 4-5 days) - would have thought a virus would have resolved by now. Or is it down to breastfeeding technique? He is EBF. I have had probs since the start with oversupply/forceful letdown, which have got a bit better over recent weeks. Only thing I've changed recently is I've gone back to offering both sides rather than just one (was sticking to one side per feed on bf counsellors advice to combat oversupply), because he had started refusing one side (so I kept having to feed him on favourite side then swapping) - but the side-preference thing started weeks ago, so not sure if that would be relevant. Also, the day the frequent pooing started he went on a nursing strike for most if the day. Other things that might be worth mentioning are that he's on antibiotics (but has been since birth - low dose trimethoprim for a kidney prob), and could be teething as is drooling lots and gnawing hands. So many things it could be! I don't know where to start! I am feeding on demand and he feeds really often (every 1-2 hours, and is a bit of a snacker). Also, he is massive - 98%, but dropped to 91st over past week. Should I try going back to one breast per feed/ block feeding, or try spacing feeds / following a feeding routine?? Any advice greatly appreciated! Smile

Sorry, MamaMia100 - I dont know the answer.

The watery, frequent green poos need an HV's opinion. Sounds like a touch of diarrhoea to me, speaking mother-to-mother. Green poo is normal and rarely any indication that there is anything that needs changing in feeding technique (and I wish HVs would stop saying 'too much foremilk' as it rarely is - it's a new one to say 'too much hindmilk' candr, but equally spurious as a reason) . But watery really frequent stuff when it has not been like this need checking out.

In your case, it sounds like one breast at a time, or two, is a matter of prsonal prference and what works best - he's clearly getting well fed :)

Sounds like a virus to me but as long as there's no temp and he's feeding well and has lots of wet nappies I wouldn't worry too much. IIRC DC'spaed only wants to see them if diarrhoea goes for longer than a week and/or there are other symptoms.

Thanks all Smile

I agree, seems most likely to beca but of a bug or something that's working it's way through his system. Does seem line a long time though, and the poos only started being green in last couple of days. For first few days they were normal colour, just v frequent!

Also, forgot to say that he has always been windy, but at the moment seems worse than ever and really uncomfortable with trapped wind, making him v fussy and waking loads at night when previously a pretty good sleeper. Not sure if a virus could cause increase in wind, which made me think maybe a feeding issue...

Sorry about all the typos! Typing left handed while feeding him. That was meant to say a bit of a bug! Grin

I would ask to see a GP tomorrow if I were you. It seems he's having diarrhoea for a week? DD was vomiting last saturday and NHS direct told me to see an out of hour GP if it hasn't stop after a day. If nothing else it will reassure you everything is ok.

MamaMia100 · 03/11/2011 13:39

Thanks everyone! Saw gp who said it dud sound like diarrhoea and should clear up soon, just keep feeding lots, keeping an eye out for temperature, dehydration etc...

So, how long should this last? Already been a week! Anyone got experience if diarrhoea is a young bf baby for this length of time? We are a bit worried and completely exhausted as he's waking himself up with explosive poos every couple of hours through the night!

Ds has also been having dirty nappies a lot more frequently over the last week,(every 1-2 hours) they are both watery and 'stringy' (sorry tmi) he has also been on antibiotics for a chest infection and the Dr said they were most probably causing the upset tummy. Could be the same if your Ds is on antibiotics too?
