Alcohol and breastfeeding.

To what extent is this allowed/advised?
I can't remember the thinking on this.
My ds is 11 months old now and eating two or three small meals a day, but still breastfeeding several times a day and 2-3 times at night.
I've been having the odd Christmas tipple.

So what do you reckon?

motherinferior · 28/12/2005 22:09

A consoling breadth of opinion - including Mears and Tiktok's views - says it's OK. I will confess I've occasionally breastfed when really quite drunk.

moondog · 28/12/2005 22:10

I never consciously reduced/restricted intake.

morningpaper · 28/12/2005 22:10

I reckon that anything less than a bottle is fine

honestly

hotmulledwinemama · 28/12/2005 22:11

Vague recollection is don't drink just before feeding but after so there is a reasonable amount of time before the next feeding - so this limits the amount of alcohol in the bm?

Mincepiedermama · 28/12/2005 22:11

This is good news for me. I want another glass. I'm prepared to wind down my Christmas intake, but I feel it must be gradual so as not to upset myself.

morningpaper · 28/12/2005 22:11

I just make sure I don't fall asleep with baby when drunk

FrostyTheRickman · 28/12/2005 22:11

I'm having a glass of wine at the moment, as I do most evenings. It's fine as long as you're not planning on drinking yourself into a stupor.

morningpaper · 28/12/2005 22:11

have another glass

hotmulledwinemama · 28/12/2005 22:12

Agree with the others - I have bf when a bit squiffy -

FrostyTheRickman · 28/12/2005 22:13

Does that mean I can have another one as well? I'm spreading my birthday intake out over a few days, ruins the affect a bit, but what else can I do?

Mincepiedermama · 28/12/2005 22:19

Ooooh! Happy birthday Rickman. I'm drinking to that.
Mmmmmmmmmm! Medoc.

Thank you, it's tomorrow though. Can't even be bothered to think about it really, will be the usual non event.

thecattleareALOHing · 28/12/2005 22:24
  • that's all I'm saying.
Mincepiedermama · 28/12/2005 22:34

Ok then I'll come clean. He has a really blotchy face at the moment for the first time and I wondered if it could be the alcohol. Probably not.

I guess it's more likely to be something he has eaten. Dairy or wheat or something. He pretty much has what we have now.

OP posts:
thecattleareALOHing · 28/12/2005 22:35

It's be something he's eaten - or and this is the case with my dd - possibly something that has been on her skin, like oranges or tomatoes. I don't worry about it.

morningpaper · 29/12/2005 10:44

Might just be the freezing cold weather?

dinny · 29/12/2005 10:47

I am SO paranoid that me drinking wine gave my ds (15 months) a UTI the other week. Could it have done?

tiktok · 29/12/2005 11:31

dinny - ask yourself how????

Does alcohol ever give anyone a UTI???

The amount of alcohol in the breastmilk is absolutely tiny - measured in micrograms which is a pretty small measure.

It can't cause infection, in the urinary tract or anywhere else.

I would love it if mothers could enjoy a normal life, inc. normal social/party/relaxation drinking when bf. There is no reason why they shouldn't.

dinny · 29/12/2005 11:33

I know, Tiktok. But you know how you torture yourself and look for reasons...?

But thank you for taking the time to post - really appreciate hearing it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Thanks.

silkcutandchardonnay · 29/12/2005 12:58

Thank God I found this thread! I have been having the odd sneaky glass or 3 over the hols and have been worrying about it (as my name suggests, I do like the odd glass here and there!)

I didn't drink at all when I was pregnant, but somehow feel better about it now that the baby is here (she is a strapping lass of 9 months now and on usually 2-3 bfs a day). Is it safe to drink more when bf than when pg? Is there any wisdom on how much is safe to drink when pg?

In case I dont get a chance to post again before 2006, a very happy new year to you all!

I confes to all the below too. Sometimes ds's nappy is v fruity. Could it be too much booze do you think?

chipmonksRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 29/12/2005 16:34

How else would you get them to sleep fgs?

MumtoAmelia · 29/12/2005 21:20

Hi all!
I had a wakw up call when at 6 weeks old I realised my daughter had never had a night without her mummy having had a drink. I felt horrible and then resolved never to drink before her final feed of the day (8pm). No hardship involved and I get to feel all rightous about it! If she wakes in the night I don't think about the alcohol (only 3 glasses of win or so) and she is absolutley fine. I read a study where they said it takes 20mins to half an hour for the alcohol to get into into the milk and it goeas away at the usual rate of one unit an hour.
Remember though, a relaxed (not drunk though) mummy is s happy mummy!.

loucaz · 29/12/2005 21:29

Anything you eat the baby eats anything you drink the baby drinks - what could be simpler! In the real world though a small glass now and then is okay but avoid just before a feed.
