Very slow bottle drinker

Hello

I just wanted to know whether this is common or of there might be something wrong with my DD.

My DD is 7 months old and has began to be weaned, she has breakfast, lunch and tea. She also drinks four 7oz bottles a day.

The concern I have is that she takes a very long time to finish a bottle, up to an hour and a half sometimes. Even before she was weaned she took along time to finish a bottle. Also even the first bottle of the day takes about an hour. Other babies I have met in classss that are the same age will down a bottle in 15 mins.

Finally I only now feed her in a bouncy chair as she takes so many breaks and won't really feed if sitting on my lap. This has made it difficult feeding her anywhere but at home.

Are some babies just slow milk drinkers or should I be concerned?

Any experiences from others would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks xxxx

This might seem obvious or a silly question but does she need a faster teat?

Tatty feeding her only at home will be very restricting for you. Like ALovely says, have you tried a faster teat?

Until she is 12 months she should be getting most of her nutrition from the milk so the advice is to give them the milk an hour before solids and then not to worry if she isn't that fussed about eating them. Its more important that she has the milk. Are you doing it that way around?

If you have tried both of the above I'd just keep on as you are but go out, if she takes an hour to finish the bottle while you are at playgroup etc, it is hard but at least you will still both be getting out.

On the solids side, can she sit on a high chair? Maybe with a cushion at the back to make it more snug. If you have one of those fancy high chairs that is too large how about a bumbo? My DD at 7mo is one of the worst sitter in my group. She falls sideways a second after I take my hand off her unless she has her hands on the floor. She can still manage a high chair going out. They can support themselves with their hands on the tray iyswim. Maybe things arent as bad as you think?

Tatty My DD is nearly 5 months and exactly the same - it usually takes an hour and a half! She just plays around....takes her time. It doesn't seem to be doing her any harm!

Hello everyone,

Thank you for all the replies. I sometimes just feel we can't get out of the the house! My DD uses Avent bottles and is on the fast flow teat.

I do give the milk first then the food and she isnt the worst eater and she sits in her high chair to have the food. To be honest she seems to quite enjoy food just not milk!

Hopefully she'll get better when she's a bit older and having more food and less milk. I just feel a little envious of some other mums who's babies finish a bottle, sitting on their knee, at the shops, park, group etc!!

Thanks for replying everyone and Lexie I'm glad my DD is not alone in being the slowest milk drinker.
