I am EBF my 3 week old Dd. Initially latching on was difficult and I had a bit of nipple damage. I had my latch checked and corrected and have been doing better but now have developed thrush. I also had this when BFing ds1. The GP gave me daktarin cream and nystatin drops for Dd. However the cream seems to increase the burning sensation and hasnt helped much yet. So I have now got daktarin gel for Dd and daktacort cream for me which worked when I had it with ds1. Two questions really - what us the best frequency of application for both? The instructions suggest twice a day for daktacort which sounds low to me. And should the gel be applied after each feed rather than 4 times a day?
Also I am not sure if I have thrush in the milk ducts or if I have a painful let down. It feels like a stabbing pins and needles type pain and I generally get it around the time a feed is due or when BFing.
Thanks for any advice!

Have a read of the BFN leaflet on thrush www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/BfN_Thrush_leaflet_Feb_2009.pdf all the info you need should be there.

I had exactly the same as you and it lasted from 5 weeks to 10 weeks. Personally I found the nystatin drops were useless. I was then given daktarin gel for DS and daktarin cream for me. I found no improvement. At 8 weeks I went to GP for fourth time and was prescribed a course of pills (sorry, forgotten name) for 15 days. Don't know if it was the pills that worked or what but it finally cleared up. It was the worst part of the first few months. The pain is excruciating and you should not have to put up with it. Really hope you get it sorted. Going back to your question, not sure about dosage but I stuck to what it said on the leaflet. I called La Leche league who were helpful.

Thanks 33. I think i might need tablets as well as I'm getting some shooting pains. At least the cream is helping. I'm not sure why nystatin is the first treatment is the first line treatment. It is full of sugar that yeast thrives on.
