How old is she?

And she shouldn't have tea - the tanin interferes with absorbing zinc.

Auntybrandybutter · 28/12/2005 06:55

cant see a problem with that. If you want to reduce milk intake for some reason, try to make it less milky!! In time it will be water iyswim

bubblegumcheeks · 30/12/2005 03:21

she is 9 months old, I didnt know that tannin was bad for babies, I tried babybush tea its the babies rooibos tea(redbush tea)its caffiene free and and recommended buy clinics in S.A. I dont know if it has tannin though I bought when I still lived in S.A. dunno which other country you can get it in but you cant get it in N.Z. where I am living now. I want her to drink water as she is only drinking two bottles a day now and even when she is thirsty she will only have a few sips of her formula.

I'm in NZ too. Where are you?

At 9 months old I would keep her formula normal strength like it says on the packet. she's only drinking 2 bottles, which doesn't seem like much. Up till a year her milk is the most important thing in her diet.

Don't forget there is water in her food, presuming she is eating fruit and purees etc.

Ds didn't crack drinking from anything other than a breast until his 1st birthday. He now drinks lots of water. I never gave him juice or anything else figuring that it was the cup he had problems mastering not what was inside.

In the bit of the supermarket where they sell the sandwich boxes etc. they sell Sistema straw cups. They are under 3 dollars each and are a clear plastic beaker with a lid with a straw in it. This worked for us, and was also the cheapest. Even though ds can now drink from a normal cup he drinks more from the straw cup on a hot day. They have sippy cups with handles, so you could buy one of each and use the straw with the handles.

Given the age of your baby would I be right in thinking you have just seen the Plunket nurse and she has concerned you?

springerspaniel · 30/12/2005 17:20

Sounds a bit mental but my LO is nearly 6months old and can just about drink water from a normal cup. Darling husband 'accidentally' taught him in the bath with a toy beaker! LOL. Not sure if he drinks much but after formula, I give solids then offer him water in a cup. Think he likes to pour it in his mouth and then tip some out but he is getting better. Is quite funny to watch.

hi bobbybobbobbingalong I am in Christchurch came from Oamaru about 3 weeks ago and yes I have concerns after seeing the plunket nurse, mym mom bought a sippy cup but my dd has not mastered it yet as it has a hard spout and she isnt used to it, thanks for the advice I will try it

Li springerspaniel my dd has this thing where she sucks the water out the cloth when in the bath I have seriously thought about wetting her face cloth and giving it to her to suck on so that she will drink some water

Bloomin Plunket nurses - It doesn't matter, it's not that warm, she will be okay, she would drink if she was thirsty. I kept telling various health professionals that ds couldn't drink out of a cup (literally couldn't get it to his mouth) and they were stumped and shut up.

Ignore the PN - keep offering water and one day she will surprise you.

Preschool seems to teach reluctant water drinkers to drink incidentally, so at some point she would get it anyway.

There are a couple of us in Chch, so CAT me if you would like a meet up - my usual name is bobbybob, just in case I've change back.

saadia · 31/12/2005 07:47

I don't know if you have the Heinx Baby Basics range in NZ, but their first cup worked with both my dss, both of whom were reluctant water drinkers. It is a lidded cup with a soft rubber spout (not non-spill), so if it's not available over there then you might be able to find something similar.

Good luck and as others have said keep trying but don't worry, as if she is thirsty she will get the hang of drinking water from a cup. Also I would just stick with trying water at this age, because it is the best thing.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 31/12/2005 19:52

I've seen those cups here.

bubblegumcheeks · 31/12/2005 22:02

Hi bobbybobbobbingalong I would like to meet up with you and other moms and babes in chch. I have seen a non spill cup with a soft spout at the warehouse that I am thinking of getting its made by tommee tippy in S.A I used nuddy which is the same as tommee tippy maybe I will go buy this feeder cup.

Just keep offering water in a cup , I got ds (10 months) to take water by offering it before milk and regularly throughout the day, he has finally got the hang of it !

bubblegumcheeks · 03/01/2006 22:20

thanks I will try that she gets excited when I give the cup but she cant suck it yet so I am going to buy a cup with a soft spout and keep trying

Ds has the Avent magic cup, I bought the white spouts that are a bit softer than the green one that comes with the cup. Ds also got excited excited and played wtih the cup a lot before he got the hang of sucking on it.

Goodluck !
