Me and DD were shopping today and went for a bum change (her, not me Grin). We went into a parenting room and it was fabulous, it was clean had plenty of changing stations and microwaves/kettles for warming bottles and food. I noticed there were comfy chairs and also cubicles. Whilst changing DD a lady came in and started muttering under her breath about being "banished for breastfeeding", I smiled politely (big mistake) and she decided to go into a massive rant about how she thought it was awful that she was expected to breastfeed in a "cupboard", this lady then turned round to a young attendant and started being quite rude, the poor attendant just looked as if she was cry so I had to step in. I suggested to the lady that she could breastfeed wherever she wanted and infact pointed out that there were chairs within the main room as well as the cubicles, I also suggested that I found the cubicles very usefull as my DD is very easily distracted and not easy to breastfeed in public, she then completely changed and said "oh you breastfeed do you, arent people small minded about it" I said that my experience of breastfeeding in public had being very positive. I honestly felt that she wanted to make a big deal of the fact that she breastfeeds her baby and was looking for an argument when infact the facilities (IMO) were amazing if you wanted to use them. I am all for standing up for the right to breastfeed in public, but goodness me some people want to argue for the sake of it - Sorry rant over!!!

But she'd been told to BF in the parent room, though, it seems? No?

I'd be bloody furious, no matter how pretty the room was.

Or have I misunderstood?

MadameJ · 25/10/2011 21:45

Sorry, I was typing so fast that I didn't explain very well. She actually only came in to change her child's nappy and didn't feed at all but she seemed to take offence that there were cubicles available (even though she could obviously feed wherever she wanted).

I was always glad of the cubicles. I am not averse to bf'ing whereever and whenever but there are times when a nice quiet sit down with the baby is great. Plus, some women are more shy or have religious/personal reasons why they don't want to bf in public so it is EXCELLENT that these facilities exist at all because without them, another factor putting women off bf'ing. You are right: some people are never happy!

organiccarrotcake · 25/10/2011 21:50

Oh I see!

Well, yes, that is bizarre. Cubicles are a great idea, especially for BFing mums with running-away toddlers!

It was the comment about "banished for BFing" that made me think she'd been told to go there to BF :) But if not, then, yes, she was totally BU. A nice nursing room is a great thing (although if I'm being slightly picky I prefer them not to have changing tables in too).

ChipsnCheese · 25/10/2011 21:56

Sounds fabulous. Which shop???

lilham · 25/10/2011 21:59

I think the rooms are lovely too. Sometimes DD is so distractable it's lovely to feed in a quiet place. Besides I agree with ILoveDolly that some people needs this to feel comfortable feeding in public. Anything to help bf mums I think it's a good thing.

ILoveDolly · 25/10/2011 22:00

yes which shop?! Does sound partic nice IME

coastgirl · 25/10/2011 22:00

I've only been in one place with cubicles and thought it was lovely. I will BF in public but you know, sometimes it's nice just to sit back and feed without pissing about with pulling tops up/down, scarves and all the rest of it. It's nice to have a cuddle and enjoy the feed instead of wanting it to be done quickly!

ChipsnCheese · 25/10/2011 22:01

NOTHING at all like that in my neck of the woods! v jealous!

petaluma · 25/10/2011 22:36

Westfield???

MadameJ · 26/10/2011 14:01

It was at the Merry Hill shopping centre (near the west midlands) [hgrin]

darn! nowhere near me then.

BertieBotts · 26/10/2011 18:35

There's a nice feeding room in a shopping centre in Leamington Spa too - the changing part is a bit smelly, but the feeding room (separate) has comfy chairs, magazines, bottle warmer and a water dispenser, and there's a special parent & child toilet with a tiny little toddler sized toilet next to the adult sized one, and it's easily big enough to bring in a big pram.

Perhaps we are just extra child friendly in the Midlands Grin

ChipsnCheese · 26/10/2011 22:11

Seems that the Midlands is the place to be!

naturalbaby · 26/10/2011 22:22

We are regulars at the Leamington Spa feeding and changing rooms Bertie although last time my 2yr old totally freaked out at the bloke sitting in there feeding his baby because he dared to smile at him!

John Lewis also has a nice parents room, and Ikea was pretty well planned out too.

never had a bad experience BF in public. some people do like to make a song and dance about everything though don't they?

BertieBotts · 27/10/2011 09:54

Ooh who are you, naturalbaby? I wonder if we know each other in RL?

TitaniaP · 27/10/2011 14:34

House of Frazer in brum city centre also has fab feeding facilities. So maybe the midlands is better than I give it credit for! I'd love some child/baby friendly cafes though. I agree though that there really is no pleasing some people!
