Weight gain

Dd is 18 days old and was weighed today - she weighed - 3710 grams at birth (8lb 2oz) and today she weighed 4350 grams (9lb 9oz). The midwife seemed shocked and asked of I was really exclusivley breast feeding which I am. I am feeding on demand and sometimes this is every 1 hr or other times she goes 4hrs - I just feed he when she wants. I am now worried that she is going to be huge / I can't leave her to cry and root for the breast but not sure why she has put on too much weight - anyone had this.

sounds like youre doing a fab job! i cant remember exact figures but i know my DS put on lots at a pretty fast pace in those early days, he was always at the top of the centiles - health visitors were always amazed when they heard i was exclusively breastfeeding on demand too. it slows down eventually and now, at 20 months, my DS is pretty similar to all his peers (including the ones who had petite babies and worried about them being too small).
she wont be huge - she will be the size she is supposed to be if youre bfing on demand, thats the way i look at it. so i would try not to worry if i were you - although i know we never really stop worrying do we?! :)

Do you have a local BF support group? Go along, meet others and reassure yourself that you're doing great!

Thanks - just worry about the cluster feeding she does being "too much"

My DD gained 1lb per week gor the first 4 weeks

She was 10lb when born and is now 18.4lbs at 11 weeks

She is off the chart in the red book

Every tine she squeaks I feed her
It means she is very content and never cries, she!s a little baby who just exists to eat and sleep Grin
She is happy and healthy. She is my second. I might have worried if she was my first but DS1 was a big baby and is now a bog standard average 2 year old

Ir sounds as if you are doing a wonderful job, go with it, trust yourself and ve proud of your blooming, healthy baby

It's totally normal, I promise. Breastfed babies don't know how to overeat. You just obviously have a baby stocking up on food supplies at the moment.

My DS was breastfed and seriously put on several pounds a week for the first few months. He had about seven chins at one point. Medical professionals complimented me endlessly on the quality of my milk because he was so chubby that no-one could believe he was breastfed.

At 3mo, he was in 6-9mo clothing and by 6mo, he was wearing 12mo clothing. I too worried a bit that he was overeating. But actually, it came in very useful as he caught a few vomiting bugs last winter and lost weight quickly. Because he was a big baby, I didn't have to worry too much.

And when he started crawling at around 7-8mo, I noticed his weight gain slow down. Now he is 14mo old and running around, even though he is still an amazing eater (and breastfeeds at night), he is not at all chubby. All trousers are too big around te waist. In fact, now he can still fit into 9-12mo trousers he was wearing nearly a year ago!

So just feel proud you are doing a great job feeding, your baby is getting what they need and growing well. When your baby cluster feeds, this is a way of working out the exact milk supply they need by stimulating your let-down, not you overfeeding them.

You are doing a wonderful job - breast is best!!!!!

Thanks - I feel a bit more reassured now -it's awful how you are made to feel a freak - the midwife was looking at her scales like they were broken or something and then telling me she was nearly on the 91st centile like it was something bad - someone has to be there. Dis make me feel a bit weird feeding her last night too - like she was greedy SadSad

gluttom, thats super. DS is on 91st centile for weight and 98th centile for length. At 4 months he is in 9-12month baby grows. It bothered me a bit to begin with but now am actually very proud of my magic milk Grin

DD is nearly five months and at 8,8 kilos she's off the chart! From everything I have read ebf babies cannot overeat, the weight in the first two years is NOT an indication of future weight (genetics is though) and bf babies are less likely to have weight problems as adults.

We met a friend's baby the other day who at 12 months is 7 kilos and DD just looked huge in comparison but I think it's because a difference of a few kilos at this age makes a huge difference overall.

RubyrooUK · 26/10/2011 13:53

Also OP, I was apparently a very chubby baby indeed (photos show many rolls on my thighs!) and I was breastfed.

I then grew into a slim child and very petite adult, so I that must have been how I needed to grow.

So please don't worry! As you can see, some people just have hungry babies early on. I think you are unlikely to have a giant in a year's time.

MigGril · 26/10/2011 14:15

You can't overfeed a breastfed baby. Your doing great just keep on doing what your doing.

Neither of my baby's lost weight they both just gained. Made the midwifes quit happy, they said both times I must have gold top. DD was a big baby 98% centil she a very average 4year old now. DS wasn't as big only 50% but still gained well to start with.

gluttom · 26/10/2011 14:42

I have read stuff on the Internet and come to conclusion that I can't over feed her so am going to try and relax and tryst she knows what she is doing! Thus is dc3 and my others were normal gainers so thus us just a shock to me that she has put on 1lb 7oz in 18 days!
