Antibiotics and BF

I got prescribed both topical antibiotics (gentimaicin) and amoxysilin last week for 10 days but forgot to ask if it was ok to continue BF. Now DS has rashes and am not sure if its because he's reacting to the drugs.

the pack does say to be avoided if pregnant or BF but I had a really serious case of otitis externa and otitis media. Was anyone advised to stop while on antibiotics? He's 25 weeks now.

And weighs 23pounds
so I gues he can move to solids asap but I tried cerelac stage 2 and I think that could be the culprit as well.
I would really appreciated advice on whether cerelac OR bf on antibiotics can cause rashes.

What is celerac? If it's a formula - yes it could be that.

My experience with bf and taking antibiotics is that they did give Bob a rash - but the need to take them was stronger.

I would give him some probiotics to boost him up.

maZebraltov · 27/12/2005 04:21

isn't celerac celery root?
I think amoxicillin is ok, but don't know about the other one (don't have my lookup book, sorry).

maZebraltov · 27/12/2005 04:24

gentimicin is down as compatible , diarriha & bloody stools reported but not rash.

amoxicillin looks ok on same website, diarrhia but no rash occasionally reported in infant.

cerelac is infant cereal with wheat and milk. The one he's on is banana flavoured fortified with vitamin A and iron.

Okay, my money is on the cerelac. It sounds awful. Wheat can cause a rash - check out the allergy threads under weetabix and weetbix.

Ds is allergic to bananas. he is also allergic to a lot of "flavourings".

Can't you give him porridge?

finefatmama · 27/12/2005 08:34

Thanks, i'll check it out. i will most certainly stop asap and try porrige.
He seemed to like the banana flavour and was only on very little every day.

mama - read kellymom.com there is a section on what medications are compatible with bf (all researched by AAP) - also I agree with bobby - he could have had an allergic reaction to wheat or cow's milk.

Porridge or rice cereal are much better, as they are not on the high risk allergenic list.

ps - if you can't find the medication list on kellymom.com, let me know and I will post the link for you.

mamma - how old is you baby ? I would not judge whether he is ready for solids or not by his weight. He needs to be ready for all the other reasons too (again please see kellymom.com) plus feeding solids before 6 months can cause allergies.

Both UNICEF and WHO recommend no solids before 6 months. Many countries have now banned what we still allow here in the UK: printing "from 4 months" on baby food products. This is not recommended by the major international baby feeding orgs.

nannah - he is 25 weeks. 7 days won't make a lot of difference.

nanneh · 27/12/2005 21:03

oh sorry, hadn't seen his age. Yes, I guess 7 days won't make much difference. I thought he was much younger

finefatmama · 28/12/2005 00:23

Thanks. I feel relieved that i'm not the one making my son ill. it's all on the list. and i'm sure the co-dydramol is ok as well.

SIL told me that her two kids get the rashes with penicillin but i dont know if this could be related.

Wheat Flour, Skimmed Milk, Sucrose, Palm Oblein, Banana, Corn Oil, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamins, Ferric Pyrophosphte, Vanillin.

The rash could have been caused by any one of these ingredients, with the exception of the calcium. I'm sure your baby doesn't need added sugar. Palm oil is just a revolting cheap fat. My ds reacts badly to vanillin.

"Currently, the industrial processes for creating vanillin involve formylation of guaiacol (by the Reimer-Tiemann reaction) and also the fermentation of lignin, a byproduct of the paper industry." yum, yum sounds tasty.

Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanillin"

Greenpeace seem to think it has GE ingredients in it.

I felt sad reading an Indian parenting site where MIL feeds child home made dahl etc. and DIL wants her to use cerelac because it is modern, convenient and healthy.

It seems mostly to be used for children that need fattening up - not an issue you have.

Of course he likes the taste - the more he eats the more money Nestle make.
