For the experts - about clicking sound during feeding...

My DD from the beginning always clicked continuously through feeds. Every feed. Weight gain was good however, and midwives etc said no tongue tie.

I've just noticed however that at some point over the last week or 2 she has stopped clicking! Maybe occasionally, but hardly ever!

What could have caused the change? Is it just that she is now bigger so can latch better? (Incidently she has a teeny tiny mouth, and I have MaHOOsive nipples that caused a lot of problems until I learnt the exaggerated latch tecnhique...)

Just wondering...

Not an expert but DD did this at first. HV commented on it and just asked if it hurt me. It didn't but then after a couple of weeks she stopped. I never even noticed or thought about it until I read your thread. I know she doesn't do it now but she is still a noisy eater.

Clicks can be due to latch problems which may have sorted themselves out.

DS has done it at some points (about 4 months old? and definitely recently at 21 m.o.) but it's always sorted itself out again.

High arched/bubble palates can result in clicking during feeding but tend to resolve when baby is bigger (the sound that it not the shape of the palate).

Exaggerated latch is one way to get baby latched on deep enough so the sound isn't made so well done you for doing that all by yourself (and I don't mean that patronisingly - just great mum sense!).

Thank you! Smile

My DD used to click a lot when feeding during the early weeks. I had oversupply and the letdown was too fast so she needed to keep breaking the suction. She was also gaining weight like the clappers as she was getting tons of milk. When my supply calmed down and adjusted to her needs, the clicking stopped.

DS2 started clicking noises about 8 wks, having never done it before. Infant feeding advisor thought it was combo of fast let down/oversupply (no longer issue) and him just being really strong sucker! ( big boy, 12lb at birth). Never seemed to affect him much, maybe slightly more wind, and then clicking just stopped!

Yep, I had the same at the beginning, but once DD was a bit bigger and a better latcher, the clicking stopped.

I've literally just noticed DS is doing this. I'm feeding and browsing MN. He's only 11 days old and was 10 days early. I suspected he wasn't opening his mouth wide enough and the click and sore-ish nipples confirms it. I'm going to concentrate on getting a better latch and try the exaggerated latch too.

Thankyou again MN. :)

Interestingly - my dentist has just recently commented on my unusually high palate, and said DD was the same - so it wasn't me getting her on a bad latch all the time, but her mouth shape! Grin

(I tried everything to improve the latch in the first few weeks, as she was deforming the nipple and it hurt. )

Just thought others might like to know if it affects them!
