Face covered in red spots & bringing up feeds

Posted message "health visitor driving me crazy", so some of DD's history of feeding problems is on that thread.DD is 6 weeks old tommorow. Mears u suggested I wait 6 hrs to feed to see if she would take feed better, but she does seem to be getting hungry between3-4 hrs at mo. Feeding a little better last few days, but still falls asleep after 1st oz, wakes up after 15mins and carrys on.
Unfortunately gave saline drops suggested by HV, but she didnt mention that it makes them MORE mucusy & I have just found out today (from a book) that you shouldnt give them for more than 3 days precisley because of this. I ve been giving them since Friday. She now brings up quite alot of feed and catargh and it is very upsetting for both of us!!
I also dont know what the red spotty rash is that appeared on her face on yesterday morning. It isnt anywere else and there is no fever. She seems unhappy & sobs unless feeding or being rocked to sleep on me. Have not left house for 3 days now. Dont quite know what to do ? Is it ok that she is only taking 14-15oz a day as she is 8lb 3oz.?? Help as very anxious mum , going a bit nutty!!!!!

Are you sure Mears really suggested leaving six hours between feeds???? Tiny babies need feeding at least three to four hourly. Sleepy feeds also seem normal to me at that age. Nearly all babies get red spots on their faces, it's hormonal and nothing to worry about - just a form of acne (lovely!). Also unsettled babies are pretty normal. You do need to get out of the house for your own sanity. Put the baby in the pram and go for a walk after a feed. It will really help you to get out, go to a cafe, have a cup of tea and some cake - meet a friend. Your dd will almost certainly go to sleep because of the motion. And you will feel much better for it.

hi melsy, why not go and see your gp to put your mind at rest. it is quite common for small babies to get a "milk rash", ds did, it cleared up itself in 2/3 weeks. nevertheless, i would go to the gp. good luck.

I think mears only suggested that you could leave your DD up to six hours during the night...melsy are you trying this all day?? Aloha is right she will need feeding more than this during the day.

Baby acne...beautiful!

As to being grumpy unless held, sounds like newborns to me

melsy · 29/10/2003 12:47

yes I know sees wierd but her last thread was 6 hrs ??? Dont worry have not been doing this( my nerves are to fryed to let her go THAT long. I have also started trying Tracey Hoggs E.A.S.Y plan since weekend.

Ooops just re-read that other thread, and mears does say during the day doesn't she? note to self, pay more attention

She is probably just the lasting effects of her cold then, maybe she is still finding it difficult to breath when feeding hence the break. And maybe why she is seems unhappy.

If she is getting hungry and you are feeding her then don't worry about weight or how many ounces she is eating, she'll let you know if its not enough.

Im bf but my 3 week old has to have her nappy changed mid feed so that she gets the hindmilk as she just falls off my nipple when she falls asleep.

Agree with Aloha about getting out of the house, relax a bit more you may both feel better for it.

Though if you are realy worried about her put your mind at rest bypass the HV and see a doctor.

melsy my first was a difficult feeder. I to feed her every 3-4 hours in the day. We had to use saline drops and we used them for more than 3 days, they were prescribed by the doctor. Also we were told to a bit of karvol on a hanky and put this near to the baby but not close enough for her to touch it. And the spots, well mine had them all over her neck for ages! I think it was caused by the milk on her bib - poor thing but nothing to worry about

Was asked to coffee grp today ,but wasnt going to go. but I think I will make the effort . I have been running round the house now trying to get everything ready!!! The GP is useless at my surgery , he is junior doc and always ends up phoning peaditricians whilst I'm in the room for advice! Its also major difficult to go ,as nowere to park and to far away to walk, especially with rain today!! So I try and leave it for emergencies. Which I suppose it isnt , just me being nuerotic!

It's not an emergency. Try to relax. I hope you went to your coffee group - it's absolutely vital to get out of the house. Six weeks is a fantastic age for getting out and about. Motion will make your baby sleep, she is totally portable and you can basically go anywhere. Do try to relax. Just about every baby gets a spotty face - usually if you want to show them off or take their photograph. Babies hate colds because they don't breathe through their mouths, but it is only a cold, and it won't cause her any more serious harm than it would you. Try to relax (which is easier said than done, I know!)

I also think feeding him 3-4 hourly is fine rather then trying to wait for 6 hours. My understanding from Mears is that you should not let a newborn SLEEP for more than 6 hours without a feed during the day. When dd was younger she would lay on my lap for hours and hours sipping and napping, I never knew when one feed had finished and the next had started.
I also agree that you should try to go out, even if it is very brief (I sometimes just go out to post a letter)
good luck!!

Back from being out at friends - nice afternoon, but now sooooooo tired and giddy. Sorry about all fretting and stuff - got overwhelmed by reading baby books and trying to do to many new things with baby. Like sort out feeding & sleeping issues all in one go whilst she is ill. Losing my logical mind!!!!

DD doesnt seem to be throwing up as much since late last night. Hope she is over the worst of cold and gunky stuff!!! She also managed to have nearly 18oz yesterday! Hope by writing this here I havn't jinxed the turnaround!! Such a pessimist!

Dear Melsy
Try & rely on your instinct & feed when the baby is ready, not when health visitor says so.My HV [over the phone]said my third son probably didn't want the breast anymore when he screamed as I lay him down to feed but turned out he had an ear infection -only found when I took him to the doctor the same day.Red spots are common a few weeks after birth ,will go eventually.I think the first 3 months of a baby's life are hard for new mums who often are dreadfully tired ,feel frumpy & trapped.
Hard to believe but it will get better & one day you won't feel as tired .Then you'll start thinking about another baby !
