Is this is a sign of poor milk supply?

Last few days DS hasnt been very content at the boob! I think he has had a growth spurt as he has jumped a centile on his little chart thing so that would explain more regular feeds but while he is feeding he is no longer satisfied on one boob and I swap him to the other and even after both he still seems hungry.

I left him overnight on saturday night - I expressed twice but still got very very engorged and DS got 6 full feeds from a bottle - has this break in breastfeeding in the middle of a spurt caused my supply to lower or is this all normal?

Feeding from both sides is a new thing - is that just a natural progression as they get bigger?

Ive read on here many times that not feeling full doesnt mean no milk but i much prefer feeling full and firm when i feed him so i can tell the difference afterwards!! At the moment they just feel floppy all the time

Hi Beccarollo, I've forgotten how old your DS is. I hate to say it, this sounds fine. I recently posted a thread about something similar adn the best advice I was given was to not stress about it and feed as often as DS wanted to. After about 4/5 days I started to feel "full" again and started to get engorged over night as he's finally started to drop one of his nighttime feeds (yipppee!! )

However, now that the boobs have adjusted to only one nighttime feed they feel floppy again, but I feel more confident that there's enough for DS at the moment.

My advice is to try not to worry and feed more frequently (or express). We increased to every 2.5 hrs for a couple of days.

HTH

Beccarollo, I always found that if I became engorged overnight, a couple of days later my supply would seem to have dipped (indicated by ds fussing at breast and lots and lots of evening feeding). This really stressed me out to start with, but once I got used to it I relaxed and knew that the supply would always alter to match junior's needs. I also found that at about 8 weeks my boobs always felt soft and empty but DS continued to put on loads of weight. So 'soft and empty' does not mean no milk!! It is so easy to lose your nerve thinking you have not got enough milk. I went through this 'engorgement followed by low supply' cycle several times with DS, but still manged to breastfeed for 10 months.

JackDSmum's reply was much better than mine, and said exactly what I was trying to say

Forgot to pickup on the engorgement - I find that DS does have a hard time feeding when I'm engorged as the milk comes out more quickly than he likes, lots of splutterings etc. I sometimes find expressing to relieve the engorgement just keeps me engorged, so I ride it out for a few days, expressing just enough until soft around the nipple and then, as JDSM said, your body adjusts fairly quickly to the 'now desired' amount.

Some mums seems to feed off one side only for one feed, I've never found this worked for me. When DS was 7wks-ish he would feed for about 10mins each side and get plenty of fore- and hind-milk. This also helped me to not get engorged cos if one boob went for 5-6hrs without a feed it would become a cannonball.. so I would have one floppy and one firm!! My bra got very confused
