Best method: get the baby to feed a lot on that side, ideally with his chin pointing to the lump. Other methods: massage the lump while the baby feeds. Express from that side to clear the lump. (You can temporarily reduce/stop solids to make him feed more if you're really desperate.)

A blocked duct is red and hot and sore. (red doesn't mean mastitis, or at least, I've had red patches without any other mastitis symptoms, and cleared them easily.)

hermykne · 21/12/2005 20:39

when i got it, it was red and tender, localised.
massage is a help......dumdedum....

Is there a lumpy area? I had this, it was painful to touch but it was definitely mastitis as I had the red mark. The fluey symptoms would also hint at it being mastitis in which case you need anti Bs quickly. Hopefully more experts will be along in a minute.

If it is mastitis I got one of those heat up in the microwave 'hotties' and lay it on my boob - it was fabulous

NotQuiteCockney · 21/12/2005 20:45

Shit, I missed the bit about fluey symptoms.

Express loads, massage the dodgy bit while expressing. Get the baby to feed more.

You can clear mastitis (or near-mastitis) without anti-bs, but it takes quite a bit of effort.

I'd go to the GP tomorrow because it's coming up to Christmas and you really don't want mastitis over this weekend, apart from the fact seeing a GP would be hard.

Get the GP to give you a prescription for the ABs, then you'll have them if you need them. Don't want to think of you trying to find a pharmacy on Xmas Day.

And do all the other things suggested too.

I got rid of my blocked duct the other week by having a bath, as hot as I could stand it, lying in it for about 10 minutes, then hand-expressing the milk under the water. Far less painful than any other method I tried (shower was a second-best). Without water on my boob it was just too painful.

Pagan · 21/12/2005 21:06

Would also add that when I had it and called my doc I was going to have to wait 2 days for an appointment. I told them on the phone that I knew what was wrong and knew what I needed so I got seen right away - don't be fobbed off by them

suzi2 · 21/12/2005 21:06

I'm pretty convinced I had one earlier this week. I woke with a very painful, engorged feeling left breast. Although it wasn't engorged or red. Just sore in one area. I think I had been lying on my hand.

Anyway, I fed off that side loads and massaged while I did it. I put a hot water bottle on it and alse expressed after feeds massaging the sore spot. A day later it had gone.
