Proposed letter to MP pointing out his complete pig headed ignorance abuot bf-ing...

Folloning on from that thread about emailling your MP regarding legislation abuot breastfeeding in public, I am planning to send a follow up to my MP's reply. Something along these lines... Any more suggestions?

Dear Mr Ottaway.

Thank you for your replay (dated 16th December) to an email I sent you regarding breastfeeding in public places.

Quite frankly, I am astounded by your ignorance. "In my opinion, private businesses should be free to choose whether breastfeeding should be allowed. Even if mothers wanted to breastfeed their baby in a restaurant, for example, I doubt they would want the restaurant owner to face a huge fine simply because somebody complained." So, what you are in effect saying is that, whilst you wholley agree that breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby, you believe that private businesses should be allowed to discriminate against breastfeeding mothers by prohibiting them from feeding their baby in what is the most natural and beneficial manner. The restaurant owner you mention above would not face a huge fine because someone complained, they would face a huge fine for asking the breastfeeding mother to move or stop. Yes, I believe that any breastfeeding mother would be delighted for such a restaurant owner to be fined for such blatant discrimination. To avoid the fine, the restaurant owner would simply have to tell the complaining customer that they should simply look or move somewhere else. I can only assume that you think that the ignorant person who finds the breastfeeding mother offensive has more rights than the mother nourishing her child.

You claim that it is a lack of adequate breastfeeding facilities in public places that is the root of the problem. I can only assume that you are not familiar with breastfeeding since special facilities are not, in fact, required at all. All you require is a seat and, of course, a pair of breasts.

I still particularly love the fact tht he's got his own wensite address wrong on his headed paper. Quality.

And I do feel a certain fondness for him since he managed to get the word "draconian" into his reply. Shame it was in the phrase "legislation is an unnecessarily draconian instrument"

the more I discover about him, your version is obviously dead on perfect (although i'd add 'did you know your website url on your letterhead is incorrect' just to REALLY annoy him...)

please tell me you didn't vote for him?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2005 19:50

Morningpaper - did your friend get exactly the same response from her tory MP? Right down to "in my opinion, however..." and "I believe..." ?

thanks yoyu

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2005 19:54

Heavens no, I didn't vote for him. I am currently composing a section about his incorrect URL to end my letter. I don't think I'll use the phrase "ignorant tory tw*t" in there at all though.

I am interested to know if his "personal opinion" is spookily identical to other Tory MPs though.

Yup, what I really hate about his letter (apart from the obvious) is that he's spent 50% of it telling me how wonderful bf-ing is and how important it is to maternal and infant wellbeing. Like...duh. Just don't do it anywhere my golf buddies and I might see you, there's a good girl.

There is nothing like a Tory MP for a bit of patronising pompous windbaggery, is there?

popsycalindisguise · 21/12/2005 19:59

done

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2005 20:02

"the arguments in favour of breastfeeding are compelling..." but not so compelling I think you should be allowed to do it in public, wherever you like. Get thee to a feeding room, woman!

unless i am reading it incorrectly, my mp seems to have been on a nestle 'jolly' recently
Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Anne McIntosh, led a delegation of MPs and Members of the House of Lords to South Africa to visit Nestlé ?school and environmental? projects. Flights and hotels were paid for by Nestlé. Other MPs known to be on the trip are: Nick Brown, Doug Henderson, Julie Kirkbride and Frank Roy (a government whip).

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2005 20:17

You could bring that up in your letter, Popsy I'm sure they'll understand the ins and outs of the Nestle boycott

Actually, as Croydon is the Home of Nestle UK, maybe I can ask Dick O his views on the matter...

I ahe sent the email now....but I WILL RESPOND TO HIS RESONSE

kiskidee · 21/12/2005 20:26

its been said already but what a complete arse your mp is soupy. send your letter. can't wait to see how he responds. would be really nice to when you have had enough, to turn your letters and his replies on to a local journalist with sympathies on this topic.

snafu · 21/12/2005 20:36

Aha. Interesting...

morningpaper · 21/12/2005 20:40

Soupy my chum's letter sounds surprisingly identical but I don't have the details here... I wonder if there is an official Tory line ?????

philippat · 21/12/2005 20:55

so he made the effort to sign:

That this House is opposed to the proposals in the Treasury's consultation document Banknote issue arrangements in Scotland and Northern Ireland; notes that the ability of Scottish banks to issue their own notes is a longstanding tradition; further notes that although the consultation document implies that its main aim is to strengthen this arrangement, there are several issues that contradict this; believes that Scottish note issuing is a matter of pride and of promotion of Scotland and has well-founded economic benefits; and calls for the Treasury to abandon any plans it may have to tamper with the current arrangements which work perfectly well.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2005 22:08

He signed this one abput ELECTRIC SHOCK TRAINING COLLARS FOR DOGS too. So he cares about dumb animals...

"...and notes ICM research commissioned by the CLA which shows that 77 per cent. of people agree that the countryside in England and Wales would look worse without cattle and sheep."

pmsl! He signed that one too

PantomimEDAMe · 21/12/2005 22:19

Right, you've finally spurred me into action and have emailed my MP. Sadly on the day the House rose, but through his own website so hopefully he will read it. He's a Tory too so I will be looking out for any evidence of round robins. Although to be fair, I don't think he'd do that, from previous experience of writing to him. Let's hope he doesn't let me down...

kiskidee · 21/12/2005 22:24

hey, this has also made me find the time to write a letter via snail mail to mine. the old codger doesn't even have an email addy so I am intrigued on what his response will be if I get one. he is a dinosaurwho always gets reelected because the 'other party' will never win in this constituency.

popsycalindisguise · 09/01/2006 19:19

I got a response....

Thank you for your email. I apologise for not getting back sooner, but I have just returned from the festive break. Nick wants me to let you know that he is in support of what you say, he understands the importance of the issue, and has signed the Early Day Motion (1046).

Thanks again for writing to Nick about this important issue.

Yours sincerely,

Luke
