Does anyone know how to help with mastitis WITHOUT feeding the baby?

My DD has either a lactose or milk protein intolerance, and we've switched her to soy formula, which has made her a whole different baby. (In a good way.) I've been trying to pump some to ease into decreasing my milk supply and not wind up with mastitis, but woke up with a raging bout this morning. Does anyone have any ideas?

Oh c&c's mommy - glad you have found a solution to your poor unsettled baby! But also sorry that you have had to stop breastfeeding - what a shame.

From what you say, you haven't actually got mastitis, but are afraid of getting it, is that right? With each of my dds my supply simply depleted over time so I never had this problem - however, I had a blocked duct last week and managed to ease it by lying in a bath, as hot as I could manage it, then after about 10 minutes, gently expressing my boob whilst still keeping it under the water. This helped ease the pain enormously - doing it under the shower is good too but the bath was better for me. HTH.

I have it on my right side. (her favorite side) I don't have a fever or anything yet, but it is as hard as a rock, and very painful. She finally is sleeping pretty decently at night, and now I can't sleep because my boob hurts. Will try the shower/bath thing now she's down for morning nap.

homeopathy worked pretty well for me with mastitis. can't remember which remedy I used, but you could consult a homeopath or look it up on the web, then get the remedy from the chemist / health food shop. good luck and i hope it doesn't develop.

There's a lot of different ones. Unfortunately, I live in a really small town where there isn't a lot of access to stuff like that, but thanks.

Nurofen and warm baths with flannel on boob.

If it's really mastitis and not just engorgement, you need antibiotics, fast.

Agree with aloha - I'm usually an antibiotics-hater, but with mastitis I'd be camping out at the surgery for a prescription like a shot. No exaggeration.

Mastitis is nasty - hope you're feeling better soon.
