how on earth do I chose which formula??

my baby is eight and a half months old and I am now giving her 2 formula bottles in the day with a breast feed morning and night. I stood in the supermarket last night and panicked at which formula to choose!! I have no idea at all. I plumped for SMA follow on for now and thought I should seek out some research to see if any are better than the others nutritionaly. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

none are any better than others. they should all be pretty much identical nutritionally.

however, it may be worthwhile avoiding follow-on milks as they have extra iron and can cause constipation

it is really a hit and miss thing though. ds couldn't tolerate aptimil or farleys (both made him very sck) and cow and gate and sma both made him constipated.

it's maybe worthwhile getting a few of the little ready made cartons to try first?

TWP · 21/12/2005 15:06

thanks, I have been trying the cartons for a while but she had no preference at all. It was yesterday I decided I should stop chopping and changing and choose one to stick to but it is daft how many there are. Thinking about it though she has been a bit constipated but because I have been giving her different ones I have no way of knowing which caused it. I have bought a big tub of SMA though so will soon find out if it is that.

agree with starlover that there is very little to choose between them, and that follow-on milks are more likely to be stodgy/less easy to digest, and cause constipation. people on here tend to prefer aptimil. but it's all a bit of a lottery as to which one suits which baby.

Seona1973 · 21/12/2005 19:32

my dd did fine with sma progress and had no constipation issues. I switched to it at 6 months cos it was cheaper than sma gold.

TWP · 22/12/2005 12:13

how about probiotics? some have them some dont, do they matter?? Also there is the issue of organic or not. There is only HIPP or cow and gate for organic. A health visitor told a friend that organic milks are more likely to be rich and cause vomitting or upset stomach, has anyone found this to be the case?

We plumped for Hipp organic 'cos it's organic and fish free (so veggie). No probs with vomiting etc. Not sure that the HV is right in that they are richer. Why would this be? Organic cows are fed much the same as non organic ones but no antibiotics etc. Ooh I'm going all farmer's daughter!!!!
My aim this time is to just do boobie up 'til a year and then cow's milk but we'll see how it goes...

throckenholt · 22/12/2005 12:59

we used farleys - just because it came in a useful tin ! And it didn't smell as disgusting as the rest !

laundrylover · 22/12/2005 13:05

Yeah, tins with removable wrappers make nice plant pots/storage instead of just being recycled! Such creative criteria I have!!!

OComeOliveFaithfOil · 22/12/2005 13:08

I used Aptimil but only because that is the one I tried out in hospital and we had some samples to take home.

tiktok · 22/12/2005 13:20

when people say something is 'rich' they usually mean it is high in fat/cream/oil/grease....there is no diff in the fat content of milk from organic cows and non-organic cows

flossygogo · 28/12/2005 21:57

thanks, that is all really helpfull. Have been using the sma follow on for a week now and no probs with constipation or anything so recon i will just stick to that unless i change for organic

hotmulledwinemama · 28/12/2005 22:05

I used Aptimil even though it wasn't organic - and I do use organic everything else (well nearly). Liked the fact that Aptimil contained probiotics (sp) so that pooh was more like that of bf babies - and it was. Tried Hipp Organic and it smelt like cake mixture as did the end result. However, I don't think there is that much variation and have had friends who have used SMA, Cow & Gate etc - so personal preference really.

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 28/12/2005 22:08

oliveoil- were you really given free samples of Aptimil to take home?

hotmulledwinemama · 28/12/2005 22:15

I thought you weren't allowed to be give formula samples - not before 6 months. The first time I got samples was in my weaning Bounty pack and that was for post 6 month formula.

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 28/12/2005 22:26

That's what i was driving at. Definitely not allowed.

thecattleareALOHing · 28/12/2005 22:28

I used Babynat to supplement breastfeeding for ds because it was organic, contained LCPS for brain and eye function, and came in a very pretty, charming and useful tin.

orangina · 28/12/2005 22:39

you could always buy baby probiotics and add to milk if the formula you are using doesn't contain them.... abc-dophilus by solgar is one, and there is another one that is suitable for vegans (too late to do a link, if you search within the last 3-4 months I think.....).

orangina · 28/12/2005 22:39

(too late for me I mean, my brain has packed up for the night!)
