BFing in a sling - thought I'd had it sussed

yes, it's early days, but i still have to go through this whole production during feeding times w/baby roisin - pillows in order, feet up. Then there's the times when she doesn't get teh right latch or she gets windy and has to come on/off.

I love it! Don't get me wrong, but am wondering when will be able to leave the house and bf like I see some ladies I'm envious of.

Any tips? Roisin still needs her head supported whilst feeding. In her sling, she always puts one of her handies in the road and comes off boob.

you can then progress to lying on your back and feed them at the side if you are large!

Think you could do it as a spectator sport, actually, NQC He sounds fab!

He's certainly quite boob-mad at the moment.

Actually, the real thing putting me off bf in public was, he seemed to be using it as amusement, and I was getting sick of having my top pulled up. He does accept me saying "no" now, and offering other food and drink.

I don't think I have to worry about him self-weaning (off boob) any time soon, he's learning to say "boob", and often gets me to take him to my bedroom, where he knows I'll happily let him feed for ages.

DD1 proudly grabs one and says 'boobies for baby sista!' at least i know i'll fit right in at her playgroup when it's time for her to go back.

you're doing so well epis!

my best breastfeeding experience this week (dd is almost 6 months) was feeding the poor child as she was balancing on the counter in argos. we'd been there for far too long & i was hoping it would speed things up. it didn't. she was happy though .

expatinscotland · 17/12/2005 22:29

the ways she grabs boob whilst she is eating and looks up at me. her sweet little eyes. she's my wee 'creature' cuz she's a creature of the night! she ate and ate all day, so i think she might have a better night. she's been up for a long, long time for some reason. still trying to find what works for her, i think.

during the day i try to have dd1 nearby so she feels included. she's our wee star. when dd2 is crying in her car seat, dd1 reaches over and tries to comfort her.

i'm so glad dh talked me into having another - i think dd1 is going to enjoy being a big sister.

I did the underarm hold for weeks so didn't really go far from home. I needed loads of cushions and things. I HAD to feed one day when out and did the cross cradle hold with my mum helping me - we must have looked a right sight! Since then, I 'practiced' the hold for 'easy' feeds at home. I used the underarm when DS was really fractious but used the cross cradle when he was behaving. It gets easier as they get bigger.

Just keep experimenting. But don't worry - you will get out again and you will manage to feed in public. as for feeding lying down, I did it in hospital a bit but my boobs are so huge they amost suffocate DS! It's not for me.

suzi2 · 17/12/2005 22:44

also -I still prefer to use a multitude of pillows where possible- although I can feed DS without.

hoXMASchick, wow! I think I'll try that next time the service is slow in Argos. Or anywhere, for that matter!
EPIS, does your dd1 have a little stool to stand on at the sink? I use one to raise my leg to give extra support on the side I'm feeding from. Oh, & it does get much easier once they can support their own head. Once they're sitting up it's a complete doddle too. You sound like you're making fab progress & so is Roisin too.

Funny the differing opinions re big boobs and lying down feeding, I am giant and have successfully fed lying down ever since I sussed out that I need to cup the breast from underneath with my hand (using the hand from whichever arm is uppermost)to kind of "stabilise" it and lift it up the bed a bit. I'm on my side with a pillow at my back so I can lean back into the pillow slightly. This really helped in the early days when it was harder for him to stay latched on especially if quite a full boob. Once they have more control over their head it gets much easier.
These days I just need to chuck it in his general direction and off he goes - doesnt wait for me to be ready with my blankets pulled up or anything.
