Weightloss in bf newborns - when to worry?

DD lost over 10% at the beginning, bfing was v stressful and ended up mix feeding after only a few weeks.

DS is 2wo today, was 2.665kg at birth and weighed 2.430 on Friday. He was/is jaundiced, sleepy feeder, I've been switch feeding for past few days, I try to feed him whenever he roots, keep his feet out during feeds and don't really let him sleep for longer than 1-1.5 hrs to ensure regular 2 - 2.5hrly feeds. But feeds are generally taking about an hour or more (with all the jiggery pokery to keep him awake and nappy changes etc). He has plenty of wet and pooey nappies and has at least 3-4 alert periods thruout the day when he is awake and looking around but not crying.

He had a tongue tie snipped last monday and has fed really well since then, just v sleepy for a lot of feeds (tho we've jsut had quite a good awake one).

Re: how stressed I was with DD - am trying to remain calm about weigh-ins for htis baby but of course it's difficult - given his small size (weight in lb was 5lb 14 at birth) when do you think he might go back to his birth weight? When do I need to be concerned about his weight remaining static? or losing? So upsetting that his feeding had improved by friday but he had still lost weight.

we generally go to sleep at 11 or 12 at night and he feeds once at 3 or 4, then again at 7 or 8 and after that I feed as often as poss.

A gain is a gain though, and gaining 2oz in 5 days is much more positive than a loss.

Tks. Am sat with exp machine next to me, hoping ds will stop sucking out my life force b4 midnight. Dd like a Jack in the box tonight, have already settled her about 5 times. Only got 7.5 ml this Aft. Not exactly uplifting but guess it will be better in the morning.

Poor you, it must be disheartening, but like Rita says, it was a gain which is good news.

How is his latch btw? May be it just needs a little adjustment to ensure maximum milk transfer. Does your hospital have an Infant Feeding Specialist that could give you some advice/support?

So it sounds like things are now moving in the right direction, but you are still anxious about the situation?

I second asking for additional support, from a breastfeeding counsellor or lactation consultant. What do you think, OP - how do you feel about the advice you have been given by the midwife?

Have booked LC for Friday. Dm just arrived and started a helpful convo about there being nothing wrong with mixed feeding. Just what I wanted to hear, thanks. Cannot seem to get value of ebf across to her.

Good plan titfer. Guess your Dm is just trying to offer you support if you seem worried- but I know, it's just not helpful is it.
