Has anyone found any link between the amount of food you've had that day & how well your baby settles after a breast feed? The reason I'm asking is my appetite has been quite poor lately. DD is 3 wks & BF very well. Usually 3-4 hrly. Lots of wet/dirty nappies & gaining weight extremely well. However, some evenings are a nightmare & she takes ages to settle & I wondered if my calorie intake (or general amount or quality of food) has led to that. BTW, I'm not eating anything "windy" either. I am taking pronatal vitamins & mumomega capsules just in case. For instance, today I had toast for breakfast & a cornish pasty mid afternoon then toast again for supper. Not very healthy, I accept but I can't be arsed to eat a big meal.
You know how it is with a newborn....every morning you run through a post-night analysis. If it was a bad night you try & figure out what caused it. If it was a good one you try & follow that recipe in the vague hope it'll happen again!
Your experiences will be gratefully received.

I have a 12 week old DD and my diet varies a lot and TBH I don't think it makes that much difference to her. When she was 3 weeks old she was much more unsettled in the evenings than she (generally) is now.

No, no link. Evenings just can be hard with a lot of babies - is she cluster feeding? Just let her feed and build up your supply - she's only three weeks old and is taking so much new information in all the time.

I had next to no appetite after I had DS - I know how that feels. It will come back, I'm sure. Keep up the vitamins and eat what you fancy when you fancy it.

My DS used to cluster feed in the evenings. During the day he fed regularly (3 hourly) but then in the evening he'd feed every hour! I just went along with it and found it was to our advantage as he then slept well.

When it came to my eating, well, I couldn't stop! Found that BFing made me hungry all the time. With DD (my 1st) I even used to take a snack to bed to eat during the night feeds .

I think it affects people differently though so try not to worry -just make sure that you do eat regularly (for your energy levels as much as anything) and if its healthy even better

I think high protein foods are supposed to be good when BF. I had no appetite in the 1st few weeks when ds was born but got incredibly thirsty. I drank so much water and still do really. He is now 6 months and I eat for England!

Thanks all!
HM, She doesn'r exactly cluster feed but I am trying to move her in that direction. I don't let her go longer than 3 hrly during the day (well, sometimes its 4hrly) so she can get an extra feed & hopefully give us all a better night.
Teabag, just had a ham sandwich washed down with ovaltine!

Maybe we just have to wait & see how it goes. I shouldn't be complaining really as she feeds/sleeps a million times better than ds did. I have discovered a slight pattern, though. After alternate feeds she wants to stay awake for about an hour. So far, this has been 10-11pm & 6-7am, with the middle feed at 3am being a nice, quick one & straight back to sleep. This I can deal with!!
