Consistently green poops from 7 wo DS - help

DS is just over 7 weeks and basically poops pesto (apologies to anyone fond of pesto Blush) - very green with curdy bits in green squirty watery stuff. I had assumed that this was all fine but have just had a read on Kellymom out of curiosity and they seem to suggsest that it's something to be concerned about :(

Suggestions are foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, some sort of illness or food intolerance/something I'm eating.

FM/HM imbalance is supposed to be rare and doubt it's that anyway as I tend to feed him off one side as am still feeding 3 yo DD and I think she gets most of the foremilk anyway. I do have a fast let down though.

Some sort of illness? :( He seems fine, content baby, bit fussy in the evenings maybe but nothing major, doesn't cry much, gaining weight like a champ (when last weighed anyway but looks enormous!).

Food intolerance/something I'm eating ... Again I thought these were rare. I still believe that DD was sensitive to the huge amounts of cow's milk I was drinking when she was tiny (DH was/is v sceptical) though she didn't go the green poop route, so perhaps it makes sense for me to cut down on this and see what happens. The thought of keeping a food diary and cutting out different foods for weeks at a time just to try to work out what it could be is just exhausting.

Also no idea where to seek help as I don't really trust most HCPs when it comes to bfing! Options are:

  • HV/baby clinic, not sure when these are though. HV seems nice enough so far.
  • We have our six week check with the GP in about a week.
  • there's a bfing support group locally on Friday afternoons though not sure about qualifications of woman who runs it.

Any suggestions/advice anyone?

Forgot to say, he's spectacularly farty!

Just a quick thought - DS2 was just like that if I ate chocolate. Easter was particularly spectacular, as I ate an entire egg and he pooed green poo right up the inside of his babygrow and over his shoulders.

If he's happy, demand fed and gaining weight then there's no reason to think it's a problem - I believe green poo is only an issue if it is in conjunction with other symptoms.

No harm in cutting out dairy for a couple of weeks and seeing what happens though.

Oh that's interesting if annoying sun - I eat chocolate near-constantly atm (DD is potty training so we have a large choc button stash, plus I keep mini bars in my glove compartment to soothe my nerves when they're both screaming in the back Blush). Dammit.

Thanks Rita that's reassuring. He seems fine apart from the green poo and the farts. Does posset a lot but I thought that was normal too/poss down to my fast let down/oversupply issues.

My son has consistently green poop since he was about 2 weeks old. He is 10 weeks old now and starts the day with one or two yellow and goes back to green doctor says he just has intestinal hurry and is perfectly normal. He is also very happy baby but it's hard when they don't poop that textbook yellow poop

I recently posted this abOut ds green poo

My ds recently had a spate of green poos and i've discovered there are various reasons, not all a cause for worry. I googled as you do and found green is within the range of normal

However in ds case he was explosive, pooing at every feed and the nappies had a quite toxic smell. Otherwise he was fine, alert and plenty of wet nappies.

Took a few nappy samples to gp who said it was likely a gastro virus and only thing to do was bf through it. He still wasn't right after 2 weeks and gp suggested he'd developed a cows milk intolerance and for me to cut out dairy and only bf, no formula. Also it might take 6-8 weeks to right itself.

My DS had consistently green poo including the pesto poo. He has a cows milk protein problem & problems with soya. He also gets patches of dry skin & had cradle cap because of it.

They stopped when I went dairy & soy free. You have to be strict with it though & it takes 4 weeks to see a improvement. Two for it to leave your body & two for it to leave theirs.

Oh & GP also said fine but was talking out his arse.

DD went through a phase if this at around 7 weeks too, lasted about 3 days then stopped of it's own accord. After doing some searching on mumsnet I found it to be very common and a lot people report that it stopped naturally too, so, if baby is otherwise fine I would give it a few days.

If you (for example) cut out cows milk and the green nappies stop, you could assume its because of an intolerance, whereas they may have stopped anyway just because it's a developmental phase, which means your cutting out dairy when you dont need to.

Does that make sense?

Of course there are babies with intolerances, so if lasts more than a few days or if there are other symptoms, get it checked out.

Ah...when I say consistently green, it was for weeks not days. The odd green poo here & there is normal. They get them for all sorts if reasons Smile
