I would.

It's all going to be sterilised anyway, isn't it?

Darnsarfupnorf · 08/09/2011 19:02

I did, it was half the price and in good condition. i scrubbed it well and then barely used it so im glad i didnt buy a new one!

btw if your wanting one, then mines sat here doing nothing!

belgo · 08/09/2011 19:02

Yes I did. It cost 2 or 3 euros and was in perfect condition.

FetchezLaVache · 08/09/2011 19:18

I did, it was a bargain! They said it had never been used and it certainly didn't look as if it had. I think it's a very good idea to get a 2nd hand one so you're not too far out of pocket if expressing doesn't really work for you.

louiespence · 08/09/2011 19:26

Yes I don't see a problem with as long as you thoroughly clean and sterilise before use! Smile

bigbadbarry · 08/09/2011 19:32

Of course I would. Don't seem to be able to give it away third-hand though, even though it is secondhand really as I never used it. Do you want an avent isis for p&p only?

Tarlia · 08/09/2011 19:34

I wouldn't buy a second hand medela (or any other open system pumps, however a closed system pump would be fine as its much easier to properly sterilise. Last thing you want is a bit of someone elses mouldy breast milk in your pumps tubes!

Here is a list of open/closed systems www.breastpumpcomparisons.com/breast-pump-specs.html#open

bushymcbush · 08/09/2011 19:44

I did, as I really couldn't afford it new. It's fab.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/09/2011 19:56

Yes, bought and Ameda Lactaline 2nd hand and it was fab. Would highly recommend it.

Agree with Tarlia though over not buying an open system, but then I wouldn't buy an open system pump new either.

bigbadbarry · 08/09/2011 20:09

Does anybody else want an isis?

Teaandcakeplease · 08/09/2011 20:15

I did. Cleaned and sterilised it well, it was great.

TitaniaP · 08/09/2011 20:43

You could buy the electric pump bit second hand and then buy a new tube and and the bit that goes over the breast.

I know you can get the accessories from the express yourself mums website (on phone and don't know how to do links). That way you get the best of both worlds!

thesurgeonsmate · 08/09/2011 20:52

I agree about the open system pumps. I only found out the difference recently, and am planning to bin my medela and buy a new pump should there be another DC. So, no, I wouldn't buy a second hand medela pump.

HipHopOpotomus · 08/09/2011 22:42

I'm
Looking on eBay the past week or too , and can confirm they are selling really well there! With DD1 a friend lent me one and I was happy to use it.

EmmaRoyd · 08/09/2011 22:46

I bought a second hand medela but it sounded like a fog horn so I quickly replaced it with a manual tommee tippee. I was so glad I hadn't wasted lots of money on a new medela.

emsyj · 08/09/2011 22:48

I bought a second hand medela swing on ebay, but the lady selling it hadn't ever used it as she didn't manage to establish bf so it was all open and the parts had been washed etc but it hadn't ever had milk in it.

nannyl · 09/09/2011 08:12

I have been given one from a friend. (she had lost the tubing so i bought some new for about £2.50 from express yourself mums)

I have no issues at all, its a medela swing and im pleased to have saved £90. If she hadnt have given it to me id have probably got one on ebay, or asked a few friends who i know have finished using theirs.

it will be washed and sterilised and i really dont see any problem!

Apparently our local Freecycle has stopped accepting breastpumps as people are too squeamish to take them. I think that the attitude lots of people have at first and then they get on with it. The planet doesn't need loads of discarded breastpumps used for only a few weeks. Save money and do some good by getting one 2nd hand. You won't even think about it once it's been thoroughly cleaned. Check out your local Freecycle too, you never know!

goodluck!

banana87 · 09/09/2011 15:08

Yes, and I did. I just made sure the parts were new, and if that wasn't specified then I bought new parts. It is definitley the best way to go!

banana87 · 09/09/2011 15:11

The medela swing is a closed pump by the way!

neverlookback · 09/09/2011 16:37

brilliant advice i wasnt even aware of open/closed systems, thanks for you info

Another vote for express yourselves mums if you're feeling squeamish, they sell all the bits and bobs!

Cosmosis · 09/09/2011 16:57

Yup, bought an ameda lacteline on ebay. Best £50 I ever spent! Used it twice a day, 5 days a week for 5 months after I went back to work. I think that works out at about 4p per expressing session Wink
