Feeding to sleep - I want my rod back please!

Fed DD to sleep, put up with all the 'Rod for own back' talk and it stopped working when she was just over a year (I think).

Now feeding DS to sleep, except no, it's not working and he's not quite 8 months yet. Where's the rod I was promised!?

I'd love it back too. Have been desperately trying to cuddle 8wk old ds to sleep each time but he's having none of it. Or, rather, he is, but then he wants to stay there!

Think instead of a rod you should have a weekend of being queen of everything with DH doing all your bidding Grin.

button, DS stopped falling asleep after every feed at 3 weeks and then wouldn't fall asleep feeding at all, but started again at around 10 weeks for bedtime, and about 14 weeks for naps. Stil works more often than not - phew - at 20 months.

Ok, stop press... twice, twice in the last 12 hours, ds has been put in his basket and gone to sleep on his own with minimal fuss!

And yes, I do realise by saying that that he will never do so again until he's at least 18.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/09/2011 12:25

button think by 18 he may be a bit too big to be put in the basket Grin

We lost the rod at about a year, too.

Fortunately, DH seems to be a great substitute for some odd reason, together with music. Oddly - Waterloo by Abba. Confused. It's on repeat for about an hour and I'm ready to throw the baby monitor out of the window within about 30 seconds of the child going to bed.

DS (12m) has gone through a couple of brief phases of not feeding to sleep in the last few months but I'm pleased to say it's working at the moment, so maybe it'll come back.

TheRealMBJ · 08/09/2011 18:46

We've lost the rod too Sad. I'm not at all impressed because DS still ^wants to feed when he is knackered, he just doesn't go to sleep anymore Sad

eightyone · 08/09/2011 20:20

I dont have the rod either and my son is only 2 months! Wish he would feed to sleep like he used to early on Sad It would be a great rod to have as I know I will always be the one responsible for his sleeping (DH is too busy to be up at night with feedings so I do it all).

The other rod I seem to be missing is the co sleeping one Sad Would love to be able to do this as well, but my baby is unable to do so anymore ( he fusses and wriggles away from me the whole time and gets frustrated). Just as well he likes to sleep in his own basket or I dont know what we would do!

zacklesMum · 12/09/2011 19:57

DS who is now 21 months periodically goes through short periods of not feeding to sleep, but they usually only last for a few days at a time, so it may be worth persevering! I think we've had about 4 such episodes. It's still working now. Seems such a civilised way to get to sleep.

I'm busy collecting a whole range of rods. I think I might need a new cupboard in which to store them soon.

Please don't tell me that at some point my son might not feed to sleep - then what would I do?

buttonmoon78 · 13/09/2011 00:05

Then you would have to empty your cupboard so you can climb in it and rock gently whilst drinking gin from the bottle. It helps a lot Wink

I've discovered a new rod - a dummy. We've got to #4 without ever trying one before but ds is so acidy and windy - it really seems to help.

TitaniaP · 13/09/2011 01:16

Ah Gin how I've missed you (G&Ts don't go well with bf and co-sleeping unfortunately).

Am feeding DS to sleep as we speak so luckily Rod is still there

I realise I'm not helping those who are mourning the loss of their rod but am truly worried than one day this may stop working. ( I mean one day in the next year or so I'm not convinced feeding a teenager to sleep is a good idea).

Total thread hi-jack but button how did the tie snip go?

buttonmoon78 · 13/09/2011 05:57

It was fine - over before I knew it. Feeding felt different straight away but he was still a lazy bugger. About a week after that I started a bottle a day and it quickly went to full ff. I am quite sad about it but bf is a two way thing and whilst I was doing everything I could, he wasn't really sticking to his end of the deal.

He def does have reflux though and having combined treatment for that with bf in the past I know it's far easier with ff, so it's not all bad! Also, dh has done some night feeds which is unheard of (!) and the dds are really enjoying being part of the feeding process now so if you always look at the benefits then it's not so bad.

Thank you for remembering!

TitaniaP · 13/09/2011 13:24

Button glad it worked out for you - I admire you with your persistence given you have other DCs!
