Infant feeding

So I've just about got my head around the fact I produce milk (and can sustain/grow babies on it) but I've now been looking at it

and can't get my head round the fact that something that looks so insubstantial can make such chubby babies!

Chubby baby thighs. Yes, I feel the same.

Although I do feel relieved that as of two weeks ago I never have to breastfeed ever again.

It is amazing, isn't it? I am so proud of those chunky thighs and double chin!

Dd1 had about 6 chins. She piled on the weight & only slowed when weaned.

I see what you mean but then when you express and all the fat from it sticks to the container its in it makes more sense Smile

I found it incredible that at six months, my DD was entirely built by me. All my own work. Well, except for the minuscule DH contribution (microscopic in fact Grin)

It might look thin and watery but breastmilk got my prem 6lb 6oz baby up to 10lb within about 8 weeks. half a pound a week just by using my milk is pretty astounding.
Now she is 1 year and she no longer has chicken legs she has lovely chunky thighs, her head is a good size and her arms are chunky. She even has a proper tummy, not a flat tum like she had when she was born

My skinny newborn now has chunky thighs and wrist fat! I feel especially pleased as I found bf so hard.

Well done us for 'fattening up' our babies! :)

I couldn't get my head round it either but love the fact I sustained DD and fuelled all that growth.
She is not very chubby but is really long - she grew a centimetre a week for ages!

My DS put on 8-16oz a week in the first 12 weeks, and didn't really bother with the whole losing weight post birth malarky (he managed a few grams but by day 5 he was already above his birth weight!) and it made me feel so damned pleased each week! He is a 50th centile baby with the most enormous thighs (and bum) but no ankles (I'm sure they are there but they are hidden by chub) Grin

My LO never lost weight at birth and has always been 98th centile for height and weight. Im still breastfeeding and it still amazes me.

I think theres something very powerful to a women being able to sustain another human with just her breast milk particularly when everything youve ever known or been good at doesnt matter anymore and you have a bit of identity crisis figureing out how to fit in to your new role as a mother.

Friend of DD's godmother had a baby at 24 weeks and fed her only on expressed milk. She was fortunate that she was a good lactator. Baby went home about a fortnight before she was due weighing the usual for that gestation (about 7lbs) and with no discernible health problems. I think that the milk may have had something to do with that. And that is bloody amazing!

Oh and my three girls have all fed for Britain but gained only 2 oz/week, becoming slender yet oh so healthy little things, and not too bothered to start solids until about 8-10 months. In fact DD3 really didn't eat anything until 10 months, so she was entirely sustained by me for 19 filliping months!! Still feeding 2x daily now at 24 months. DS in contrast gained half a pound a week on the same stuff. It is amazing.

It really is amazing, I am also a very proud BF'ing Mummy as my DD who was 7 weeks prem was EBF for 6 months and is now a real chunky monkey (born on 9th centile, now on 91st for height and weight!!) She still Bf's like a trooper but also likes her food so may need a new chart soon Grin.
I actually nearly burst with pride when I look at how healthy she is and can now look back and say that the feeding marathons (there were many) were clearly worth it x
