Has anyone else never sterilised their baby’s stuff.......

After reading this thread when I was pregnant with DD, I decided not to sterilise anything.

Wow, it was really scary just washing everything without sterilising, but DD is now 6 weeks and doesn?t appear to have come to any harm

Did anyone else take the leap?

I never have, breastfed on solids until 6 mths, any bottles or cups went in dishwasher, quick rinse with boiling water then dried and used.
No gastroenteritis at all

My Next Door Neighbour still sterilises her ds's stuff and he is 3
He is always ill with tummy upsets!

Sterilised bottles for EBM until 4-5 months then never gave her any EBM after that, never sterlised anything after that. DD only got her first cold after she was a year and had finished BFing. Never had any stomach problems, diarrhoea etc.

Bloody hell, I breastfed, but scrubbed my nipples in Milton (after a brief scary moment over the spout of a boiling kettle) - you're all mad!

Dh was just telling me last night to loosen up re the sterilising. Having said that the only things I am sterilising are his teething rings atm, though I am planning to introduce a cup to drink out of. So I shall take a leaf out of your books and just use hot soapy water to clean it first!

I was obsessed with dd (4) but am hit and miss with Ds (10wks) Use the dishwasher to clean all equipment though. Stopped with dd as soon as she was crawling as I didn't see the point with all the stuff she was getting on her hands at that point and therefore ransfereing to her mouth.

arghh my typing/spelling has gone out the window!!

Stopped sterilizing at 6 months.
Why sterilize when you offsping eat stuff off the floor and gawd knows what?

suzi2 · 08/12/2005 23:07

I'm a bit hit & miss with DS. I tend to sterilise any bottles or expressing equipment but sometimes it's been well over 6 hours before it's used which probably negates all the sterileness...

I don't worry much these days - DS is 4 months and shoves anything he finds in his mouth - including the cats tail

PranSerahndDancer · 08/12/2005 23:40

I stopped after reading that thread too.

I think in all honesty, I would have still been sterilising now had it not been for RTKangaMummy - despite reading reports on the internet about not sterilising, it took reading a "real" persons experience before drumming up the courage to actually dispense with the steriliser.

All Hail RTKangaMummy. She is deffo brill

Interesting topic! Shame the original references thread doesn’t exist anymore.

I sterilised baby stuff but she did lick the floor early so not sure if it’s useful

Sterilised like mad with DD1. She was in NICU for a while after birth and they were tyrants about it. Literally made you feel like if you didn’t sterilise you would murder someone, which I guess, is understandable given the amount of sick babies they were looking after.
I remember screaming at my mum for giving 8week (ish) DD a bottle that she’d simply washed up.
Stopped sterilising as per the guidelines in the UK at 6 months.

DS2 - was much more relaxed. Probably did it for the first few weeks then kind of did it as often as I could but not religiously.

This thread is 16 years old!

Honestly what was the point in dragging it up just to comment and say its a shame the original references no longer exist. Confused
