Just 'advised' that a 7 month old doesn't really need a feed in the night they just want comfort which might perpetuate the night waking problem. FFS what is so wrong with feeding a 7 month old that wakes in the night. Why are professionals giving advice which doesn't make a distinction between a baby and and child.

I feel so cross that this man is giving advice to women. An example of medical advice overriding a mother's instinct.

He also advised that they have a bottle or something that they can get themselves with water in... idiot. I don't know many 7 month olds that can feed themselves with a bottle of water when they wake in the night.

Maybe they can learn to do some chimney cleaning whilst they are at it..

I am so cross that this man is on TV at all. His anti-bfing views are well known - he has referred to breastfeeding past one year as bizarre, unusual and unnecessary.

belgo · 16/08/2011 07:34

In fact I think those three word - bizarre, unusual and unnecessary - sum Dr Jones up very well.

Debs75 · 16/08/2011 07:35

I think you have to just ignore some of these 'prefessionals' especially on ITV they don't seem to like breastfeeding do they

skyebluepink · 16/08/2011 07:37

Oh really I had no idea he was anti BF. Obviously I do now. Why is he allowed to spout such shite on national TV?

My GP the last time I saw him showed surprise that I was still breastfeeding and a friend told me about her doctor saying "I think sometimes it is more for the comfort of the mother" when she told her that she was still BF at 10 months

Definitely to be ignored but I am fairly obstinate in my ideas and now, 1 year on very confident in my choices, but a new mother with a 7 month old is vulnerable to this tosh.

Trouble is, when he and other professionals spout shit, most people watching will believe them, and will also regard it as bizarre, unusual and unnecessary.
They all need educating about bfing, rather than letting their (warped) feelings get in the way of good, up to date knowledge.

CountBapula · 16/08/2011 07:55

It's the whole "it's just for comfort" thing that gets me. What is wrong with comforting a baby, FFS?

I've had many, many horrendous sleep problems with my DS and night weaning made no difference whatsoever to his night wakings. It just meant sitting there patting a screaming baby for hours rather than quick feed and back in cot. Went back to night feeding in the end and he gradually dropped most of the night feeds himself but not until 8/9 months. I still feed at night at 11 months if he's ill, teething or won't settle.

Doesn't surprise me anyway - have heard much noxious tosh about bf on ITV before.

Clueless79 · 16/08/2011 09:11

It's so ruddy wearing all the -often quite subtle- negativity towards bf when it brings plenty of its own challenges anyway. What is it with Daybreak and their mission to kill off bf?? I can really see why so many new mums just think 'why bother?' and miss out on all the good bits.

...and the ff lot think they face negativity?!!

exbrummie · 16/08/2011 11:47

Someone told me recently that daybreak has a lot of sponsorship from Nestle,so I think that explains a lot.

MedicalEd · 16/08/2011 17:09

People will take what he says and quote it willy nilly to everyone they come across now, great, thanks a lot.
My HV did say ages ago about the whole offering water if DCs are still feeding at night after six months.
But when I saw her with DD who is now 5.5 months and said she goes to sleep at about 7pm until about 3/4am then back off again to anywhere between 5 and 7am, she backed down saying that was going at least 9 hours between feeds and to carry on feeding her until she drops that 3/4am one on her own.
Most people think going through the night means from 7-7 and few 6 month olds can do that.

Mishy1234 · 16/08/2011 18:55

This guy is a fool. I remember reading that he said one of the reasons women bf past a year was to delay having sex with their husbands/partners!

A twat of the highest order.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 16/08/2011 19:57

And the stuff he spouted about co-sleeping and 'making a rod for your own back' I was cringing away.

LaCiccolina · 16/08/2011 20:06

He is, all things considered, a muppet.

Debs75 · 16/08/2011 20:08

Why is co-sleeping making a rod for your own back. I co-sleep with dd3 and sometimes 2 and it is a great way for us all to sleep. Maybe if we had a house big enough and they had their own rooms it wouldn't be a neccessity but I will do anything to get us all to sleep. TBH I'm surprised he didn't talk about the 'dangers'

blowthewindsoutherly · 16/08/2011 20:14

Didn't greenmonkies from MN make an utter twat of him on GMTV once?

buttonmoon78 · 16/08/2011 20:24

But what on earth are you doing watching daybreak anyway? Wink

Gastonladybird · 16/08/2011 20:32

How have we got this far on Hilary jones without this being brought uprubbish on Hilary the bit that always sticks In my head (apart from how much experience has he got to share when he has been naffing about on gmtv sofa for 20 years) is the line about having an affair as wife gave attention to their babies? Hmm
