Avent BF 'solutions' pack at John Lewis

What do you think of this?

A bit over the top to call it a 'solutions' pack (under the 'essentials' section)? I must admit I bought a fair bit of kit as I didn't anticipate bf for much more than 3m if I was lucky and knew that I would want a steriliser for the pump anyway, but all this?!!

Sorry I think I got nipple shields mixed up with something else - the ones for inverted nipples. ?

followthestarlover · 05/12/2005 17:44

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 05/12/2005 17:45

God, I remember the sock!!!!!

Jasnem · 05/12/2005 17:48

Okay, i take the point, having seen the other "essentials". I'm not a John Lewis customer (could you tell?), so it dosn't really matter what I think anyway...

followthestarlover · 05/12/2005 17:48

me either jasnem!

MaddhurJaffrey · 05/12/2005 18:07

MaddhurJaffrey · 05/12/2005 18:08

look reckon that one will qualify

NotQuiteCockney · 05/12/2005 19:04

Nipple shields are often used for inverted/flat nipples. But they're not really a good solution.

santabops · 05/12/2005 19:15

Nipple shields - controversial I know but I would not have been able to breast feed without them . To ME they were a godsend....

(ducks for cover)

NotQuiteCockney · 05/12/2005 19:18

santabops, they can help. I used them for months with DS1 (flattish nipples, no attempts to bf for first 30 hours). But they don't help supply, and hence aren't generally recommended. I do wish I'd had better advice, and got the latch working without the shields, instead.

I got washable breastpads, then dh threw them all out cos he thought they were disposable! Think Avent are probaby losing out because breastfeeding is on the increase, so they just want to target new mums to make money on the "package" before the same mums realise they don't need everything in the pack.

julienetmum · 06/12/2005 13:56

Well I did use everything in that set and I did buy most of it in advance but I knew I was going back to work pretty early and would need to express. As it was my baby refused the breast, we tried nipple shields but they didn't work. They can be great for certain circumstances but should NOT be part of an "every mother needs" kit.

ALso the only decent nipple cream (which again should be used under advice) is lansinoh.
